"1. Incorrect - at least read the thread.
2. The magazines I subscribe to (PC Answers & Official Microsoft Vista mag) must be wrong then..."
1. No I am not incorrect, I've loads of experience of Norton and other AV packages. I've seen Norton problems on dozens of systems this year.
2. They probably get paid to do good write ups...... The same reason that PC World stock such useless AV software, it's all done by a corporate handshake.
AVG is pretty rubbish too. Better than Norton, but still not that good. As for tech support being non-existent, if you're using the free version, I'm sure it states that you don't get support. You can't expect to get a product for free and expect a technician to spend an hour on the phone for free!
The only AV software I would recommend is NOD32, not free, but the best.0 -

Problem : I ordered this from you about 2 weeks ago, I have not heard anything from you since. I do not have an order number, I don't know if you sent it to me and I deleted it or I just didn't get it, I cannot remember. Either way, no internet security!SArun: Welcome to Norton Support, my name is Arun Sanker, Can I please have a minute to go through the information you have provided?
SArun: You are being transferred to SArun.
SArun: If we get disconnected for any reason, please follow these instructions to reconnect this chat (you may want to jot down the link and code). You’ll need to do this within a couple of minutes of being disconnected:1) Open up Internet Explorer and then go to www.norton.com/dtl2) Enter the [Connection Code] 2191803) Click on [Submit]
Ms. Jennie : ok, just a minute
Ms. Jennie : done
SArun: Hi, how are you doing today?
Ms. Jennie: fine but I have the above problem.
SArun: May I confirm that the issue you are encountering is that you need to know the status of the order you have placed?
Ms. Jennie : Its in the above box, do you want me to copy paste it?
Ms. Jennie : Issue: I ordered this from you about 2 weeks ago, I have not heard anything from you since. I do not have an order number, I don't know if you sent it to me and I deleted it or I just didn't get it, I cannot remember. Either way, no internet security!
Ms. Jennie : umm, hello??
SArun: I need to verify some information. Do you mind waiting while I check this information for you?
Ms. Jennie: yes, iuts just like the box says, and just like I have said again, again yes.

SArun: Thank you for your patience. I now have the required information to help you
SArun: Could you tell me the email address which you used when you purchased Norton?
Ms. Jennie : it was **********@hotmail.com

Ms. Jennie : ok
SArun: Jennie, I didn't get any details of the order you have placed.
SArun: I think it was not placed correctly and that is why you didn't get the confirmation email.
Ms. Jennie : I am almost 100% sure it was this address, but I may have sent it via my other emai *******@hotmail.com
SArun: I checked that one also but there is nothing.
SArun: So if you want I can help you to purchase the product.
Ms. Jennie : so what do I do? I enterd my details on an offer of a free norton 2009 security for home users, but its now not going to arrive becuase despite me inputting the details, its not there. The offer has now gone, and is ony for business users, so I cannot get this same offer, this is not fair!
SArun: Jennie,I am sorry to tell you but we dont have any records for that purchase over here and Symantec didnt provide any free Norton 2009 product. It must be an offer from some other websites who is having Symantec products.

SArun: The page which is there in the forum is the Symantec purchase page and it is not giving you any offer and there is no such offer from Symantec to provide a free cd to anyone.
Ms. Jennie : no, but if you read, it did do. Its not tnow but it did do when I applied
Ms. Jennie : other people have had the CD. shyould I post thier comments?
SArun: You might have gave some information wrong and that is why we didn't receive the request in time. Now the offer is closed and we cant do anything.
Ms. Jennie : don't worry, I'll stick with talktalk. Not fair I missed the offer but I will let the forum know to save them the hassel of trying for an offer you now say does not exist.
Ms. Jennie : Thansk for letting me know. shame.
SArun: Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
Ms. Jennie : nope, let down and dissapointed but nothing you can do about that. Seeems me and over 1000 people are wrong

Norton Resellers Service Desk (who you should have contacted - not the retail service desk as they wouldnt have a record of a "purchase" because you werent purchasing) confirm the offer is closed. In fact the service desk do mention it closed furthr through the conversation contradicting the statement that there was no offer. Half my friends and colleagues got theirs, half didnt.
As for the Anti Norton brigade - Dont you actually read the posts before you go off on your rants ? I suggest before you criticise a good product, you check your facts. It is widely accepted in the professional circles that Symantec have resolved both the resource hogging and the removal problems. !!!!!! Fontaines blog may enlighten some (PC Pro submitter). The free version of AVG actually does always bring up high results in scans - it is designed to do this - to help sell the paid for version - You need to learn about false positives urgently as AVG is famous for removing 2 vital windows DLL files because it considers them trojans - these files are actually scanning AVG and AVG thinks it is under attack. The files are part of windows file protection system. But you keep your AVG because youll never be convincedFreebies you don't really need can be given to your local Hospice Charity shop so they can raise funds they desperately need. Pass on your good fortune :A0
