    hi
i have visited the url been given.
which directions we have to go to.
meaning can you please show us how we do it?
    thank you

I have added help section to end of this message. They altered the link too http://www.emea.symantec.com/uk/nortonchallenge/request.html or visit http://www.emea.symantec.com/uk/nortonchallenge/2009-products.html and select 'request nfr' on the left

Okay. First, for those who hated the old Norton for the way it hogged the system resources, I have just received my free copy, installed it and found a remarkable change over the previous versions. It only uses 8mb of the available ram - I have 1Gb (1000mb) so it uses less than 1 %. The old problem involved the dll files labelled with 'cc' at the start - these now run in normal mode and back off until the system is not being used. The password manager is fantastic. It fills in card details when web shopping which helps prevent a keylogger virus nicking your details though the anti virus is so good (updated daily now) that you shouldn't get one. It gets rave reviews and the retail version supports installing it on 3 pcs which makes it fantastic value. This free version supports 1 pc, but if you have other addresses, you could get more sent to them as they don't state any terms and conditions, so you won't be breaking any rules.
If you really hate Norton, then fine, you aren't being forced to download and install this free copy but please don't put people off who may not have sufficient security software just to have a go at symantec for a previously flawed product - This new version gets rave reviews and is only criticised for its price but as this is free its a bargain. If you have had it in the past, try it again. You can always remove it. Norton removal tool is here http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?OpenDocument&seg=hm&lg=en&ct=uk

For those who wish to take up this free offer
Visit the link at the top
Enter your name and a genuine address (so you receive it).
Company name can be anything. I used my Initials followed by 'trading' (didn't del boy do that for only fools and horses). No limited or plc. This is quite legit. You can set up a trading company and if you don't actually do any trade in its name, you haven't got to worry about the legal side of setting up a business.
Use a throw away email address. Set up a free one with your ISP (usually you are allowed at least 5) and then keep this for any freebie sites that require a genuine email address. That way, if they sell on your email address, the junk mail goes to your throw away one. If it gets too much junk mail you can delete it and start a new one. This is a great tip for all money savers to follow.
Finally, tick all the boxes as without this they won't send you a copy. Don't worry about the bit where they say 'phone calls' as they don't ask for a phone number so they can't phone you.

    Hope this helps.

Oh. For those who don't want to be converted to norton. Why not send off for a free copy and give it to someone at work. We all know somebody who just haven't got round to getting security software.

Judging by the replies above, it seems that people are basicly lyeing or naming the company they work for. Could always put your name? You are your own company, or "wife/husband/partner, 3 kids and dog", its company, perhaps not what they are looking for by worth a try? lol!!:rotfl:
right ive tryed it ,i very much doubt this will work as it says symtac will varify the company but hey worth a try :)

    justwondered-
haveing already signed up for this, it stated several times over that it was "for home users only" or "personal computers" etc etc...

So then why is it essential to state the name of a company??

Also, to those who have it, how long did it take to arrive in the post?

It says home users only/personal because Norton Internet Security is sold as a retail product. There is a seperate corporate edition for businesses which sell on a large multiple user basis. This copy is for resellers such as myself to assess the product om our own systems before selling it on to our customers. Giving away corporate copies would be financial suicide.

My copy took 2 weeks to arrive. The business name I gave them is not the name or address of my company. It is a name I use for internet purposes. As is the hotmail address I gave them. The name is no registered anywhere as a company, so as for their 'checks' its a dissuader to avoid too many 'joe publics' applying.

When you get your free copies. Post below to pass the word. I'd be really interested to hear from the anti symantec users about what they think of the new version. I have run a full scan on a test pc I keep and it found 100% of the viruses. The only niggle that some users may have is that it false posiives 'software cracking' programs as part of a wider anti-piracy issue. It declares these 'keygen' programs as trojans which undermines the integrity of the scan in my opinion, though of course you shouldn't be using these programs anyway should you .

  • I wouldn't advise using any Norton/Symantec products to protect your computer.

    1. It's bloatware - will slow your computer down
    2. Poor virus detection rates
    3. Technical support is non-existent

    Have you read the above?

Apparently its not so bloating, it seems that other people are happy with the virus protection, and in comparison with AVG which tech support is also non existant, I am hopeing this will be better- also avg corrupted many of my programmes-
I have just had to have Dell talk me through how to reset to factory settings after AVG was installed! they tested out my computer and found that the programmes I want to use (bbci, napster, itunes, photobox....) were all not able to be used as the programmes to run them, (flash, nvdia etc) were all corrupted and could not be repaired on my computer. (we tried to repair it MANY times, me by myself, and the Dell person calling.) A reset was the only way after spending an hour with them trying to repair it countless times for me. I am imagining nortan cannot be that bad! (have used norton a long time ago, had no issues but that was a free trial)

Do you have any evidence to back up your claims? could be really useful here insted of just saying "don't use it", its hard to tell in comparison with avg, or onecare, or any of the other protection programmes, if its really that much worse!

yes, but the detection rate is poor. the free avira antivir has a higher detection rate as norton missed a couple of viruses (on my system) that avg and antivir picked up

I would avoid Norton at all costs. Just because its a well known name, it does nothing more then numerous free products already do, and it's prone to slowing your computer down too.

Norton is not a good piece of anti-virus software - it has known issues that affect computer speed for example and the uninstall utility is useless as it fails to remove a large number of critical files.

Much better off using something that is always free called AVG..... and it even works properly.

I had huge problems with AVG! Its a real shame aswell as it was the one free virus protection I could find that actually didnt give me hassel with pop ups all the time!

I had issues with the Flash, it stopped Napster working, (I ended up having to re-download it every single time) and the Nvdia on my computer became corrupted. I couldn't watch bbci, 4od, youtube... and when I wanted support? Nothing! I was not allowed to even get help from an online forum as that required me to have the paid for avg protection. I was screwed, I even posted about it on the tchies forum.

In the end I had to reboot my computer and start up again from scratch, re-installing everything. From now on, AVG does not touch my computer! either it caused these problems, or some virus got in without avg finding it first.

I have also tried avira which had so many pop ups it was not true. I can understand that the idea of free software is to try to get you to buy the newer version, but once a day or whenever I turned on my computer I would get these pop ups which made my computer start up take much much longer.

I have also tried onecare, which seemed to work well, minimal pop ups advertising to me, but it was a trial and the trial ended.

Norton symmantic (apologies for spelling here!!) seemed to work well. fewer pop ups then onecare and only bothered me when the trial was ending. I didnt notice that much of a speed problem, but my computer was slow in the first place. I seemed to be able to delete it easily too, I just followed the advice given on MSE for that. During the time I had the trial (3 months) I didn't get a virus at all, I can only assume it worked well. It was the second virus protection trial I tried and seemed to work far more smoothly then others both before and after.

Correct me if I am wrong here but avg does not have any support either, so the arguement that avg is better would not be anything to do with support. I have not really noticed the speed issue- has anyone else? or perhaps I should ask, given that people say its a better version as its less bloated, has anyone else noticed a speed issue on this 2009 version?

    1. Incorrect - at least read the thread.
    2. The magazines I subscribe to (PC Answers & Official Microsoft Vista mag) must be wrong then...
    3. The online chat service is quite quick actually.

I think you're making assumptions here and really need to let people make their own decisions. As I mentioned previously, I currently use Norton, but will be going to F-Secure next, but I'd still recommend Norton.

Clean Sweep on Systemworks was brill, but they stopped that :-(
My suggestion and/or advice is my own and it is up to you if you follow it, please check the advice given before acting on it.
