Can I leave BT early?

Options
We signed up for BT broadband and phone 7 months ago - stupidly agreeing to an 18 month contract without shopping around first.

The broadband is on option3, £24.99 a month. Of course now I have done my MSE Budget Planner and discovered (a) that we are spending too much in general and (b) that we are paying BT well over the odds for broadband.

I want to switch at least the broadband, and ideally everything, to a cheaper provider but BT say we are tied in for another 11 months. They therefore won't offer us any discount at all, unless its to move to option1 (which wouldn't cover our needs) or option2 (which probably wouldn't, and is still more expensive than most of the other providers).

Their website says that there is a penalty charge for leaving early, but doesn't say what this is. Does anyone know? As it may be better to pay this now and get the cheaper deal, than stick with BT for another year.

Alternatively, does anyone have any other advice re leaving BT within their minimum term?

Many thanks for your help.

Sam.

Leave early and pay the total of the monthly rental charges left in the minimum period

Wondered when this would turn up.

You would have agreed to a 12/18 month contract for the phone as well, which will also incur a cancellation charge,as well as a cancellation charge for any 12/18 month calling plan deals if you signed up for any.

Once agreeing to the BT terms and conditions and using the service you are lumbered with it,unless you pay the cancellation fees.

You might try to continuously report your landline and broadband being faulty to the point where they cancel your contract for unsatisfactory service.

That wouldn't work very well considering the tests they would do and, if it got to that stage, an engineer visit would say otherwise.

a contract is a contract, pay the breakage fee and that'll be it - there's no way around it
  • Thanks for the responses guys. I expected as much - but am also learning that, on this forum, it is always worth asking!
