*staggers into forum looking shocked.
I've just looked at the Miele Paragon Plus on the JL website... gasp! I don't pay that much for a family summer holiday.
I am tempted by the slighly cheaper version - a platinum

but need to go and have a lie down first at the thought of spending all that hard earned money. Do you think it actually is built of platinum??Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0 -
We previously had a Bosch which lasted just over 2 years, so we decided to go for a cheaper model and opted for a Beko, seems ok and apparently they are relatively easy/cheap to repair.0

I've just had a quick look at the Miele site and there is a whole range of machines offering 5 and 10 year guarantees at present. If you are looking for reliability, even a basic model will probably offer that.

On spin speed, I seem to recall that any higher than about 1200 rpm or thereabouts didn't greatly improve performance. So a more basic model may be adequate for your needs. The model we bought was a reasonably basic model but with a 10 year guarantee and it's been excellent. This should give you more opportunity to find a machine that fits your budget.
The whitegoods site, as suggested by greenstick, is a great source of advice on many types of household appliances. I meant to acknowledge it in my previous post.

One word of caution on buying by brand, as frequently mentioned in the whitegoods forum. There have been many mergers betweeen brands in recent years, blurring the distinction in reliabilty of models due to cross-badging of models. There has also been a drive to reduce prices which has resulted in reduced build quality. So don't just automatically go with familiar names.
Brands such as AEG (our previous machine) had a formidable reputation for quality 10- 15 years ago, and many models lasted that long. However, when those models finally need to be replaced, since AEG has now merged with another company (I think Electrolux) the reputation for its build quality is reported to have suffered.0 -
Bought a miele paragon plus from John lewis six weeks ago, cost a arm and a leg, fantastic machine, with free delivery and free ten year warranty. Offer is still on.Kavanne
Nuns! Nuns! Reverse!

I didn't realise that AEG hag merged with another company, thats a shame if their quality isn't as good now. I bought my AEG 20 years ago & it's still going strong. Must admit it doesn't have all the fancy buttons & lights that a lot of modern machines have, I was once told that these just add to the things that can go wrong with it so it's just 2 big knobs on the front & not much else lol.0

With Miele its the same quality from the
most basic model to the dearest they
all last and wash exactly the same. The
only difference with mine and some of the more
basic ones is the spin speed and choice of
programes.I was a full time carer and washing
for a family and needed one with a high spin
speed because I was tumble drying a lot of
my washing just to keep up.
I do like the 30 min wash cycle use it most
of the time, mine has a 1600 spin speed but
now there are ones with higher speeds.

Thanks for all the advice, info and ideas - the deed has been done - and we went for a Miele in the end. The final cost came in at about £100 more than we'd been planning on spending on a Bosch (it's a W562 Prestige plus); we used pricerunner for comparing prices, and splashed out a whole £1 more than the cheapest price to get a free 'rapid delivery' from the Co-op on Friday. The machine comes with a five year guarantee, and both whitegoods and the fanatstic bloke from 'washerhelp' rate the machines very highly, so hopefully, its money wisely spent. Phew!
Notorious for being a tightwad, I've broken out in a cold sweat as a result, so the washing machine will be put to very good use straight away!!
You've been a great help each and every one of you - many thanks!Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0 -
I spent ten days looking for a suitable washing machine and I read many websites (including customer reviews and website of companies). At last I came to this conclusion that LG washing machines are best choice in regard to price and options they have.0
