Thanks for all the replies, he has given up his course which was a HND in aeronautical engineering which is why the CTC and CB stopped. as for the Prozac he is very angry I cannot say anything to him without him losing his temper. I will look into the IB/IS, thanks again0

I am in the same position as you, my 17 year old has dropped out of college on mental health grounds. apply for dla, it takes about 13 weeks to be awarded if gp very supportive. otherwise longer.also apply for both incapicity benefit for youth and income support....IS claim is to tide you over while incapicity is being worked out..we put our claim in for these last week, your son will prpobably need to sign to agree for you to be his representive with claims as the stress involved in interviews is not good for kids with mental health issues. if you get dla you'll probably be able to get carers allowance as well. The best help we had was from the connections service, they went through the forms with my son and have helped him and me with his paper work, if he hasn't an advisor already phone your nearest centre and they will sort him out. remember whilst these claims are being processed he will have to pay for prescriptions so i would get the IS IB for youth claim in asap...both can be done on line.

HND is HE (degree level study) so you shouldn't have been getting CB and CTC anyway. You need to contact them regarding any overpayment. If your son hasn't yet received his student loans etc it could be worth your while to try to cancel them.0 -
would also have to need the help for another 6 months as well,i.e. have needed help for 3 months already and likely to need it for another 6 monthsPenny-Pincher!! wrote: »If he needs to be supervised due to a possibility of suicide, then he may qualify for DLA with MH problems if he has needed supervison for more than 3 months.

Hi, my 17year old son started college at the start of September, he only went for 2 Weeks before the police had to search for him as he was threatening to commit suicide. He is now on Prozac and is waiting to see a psychiatrist. Having just lost tax credits and child benefit for him is there any thing he could get. I am on incapacity benefit.
Try this "at home assessment" to see the likelihood of him getting DLA:

(But, for anyone to claim DLA for anything, they have to have had the condition for 3 months, and it needs to be thought to be going to last longer than 6 months onwards.)
This site is very useful for all sorts of info about DLA etc., and it's free.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset.

He should be able to claim Incapacity Benefit under the rules for young people.0 -
Thanks for all your replies, I wished I had read the reply about Prozac before he went out last night. He went to a concert in Glasgow which had been planned for months, but boys will be boys so he had some drink. As his kidneys only work at 56% and 44% they cannot process alcohol as normal and being on prozac led to his dad (we split up long ago so nothing to do with the depression) getting a phone call saying to get through as quickly as possible and if he was lifted by the police he would commit suicide and as we live 70 miles away I have never endured a journey like that as he did not want to spoil his pals night but luckily they found the minibus that drove them through and the driver said he`d look after him but even on the way home he said that he just wanted to die because his gran would be there to look after him.So the Prozac is getting stopped I have been going round hiding all the medicines in the house from him. I already suffer from panic attacks and IBS so you can imagine how I am feeling0

Speak to your doctor before you stop him taking Prozac, if you stop it suddenly it can make these behaviours even worse. I've been taking it for anxiety since I was 19 with no problems but I know everyone reacts differently to the different anti-depressants, worth trying a few to see if a different one works, but all under the supervision of the doctor obviously!Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!

Janetgrace123. Did you get dla awarded for your son on mental health grounds? I have applied for my 18 year old son but because he has only just gone under the mental health services we did not have any letters to send in as supporting evidence although both his gp and support worker would be supportave should the dla contact them.
As for the prozac. My son was on it for a month and he stopped it over 3 days. I rathered that than him either kill himself than someone else. It was really scarely him being on it. He is not susidal now on another medication.0
