Admin charge to renew lease

The lettings agency want to charge me £30 for a quick letter they wrote to me to confirm that the lease has been renewed for another year.

I don't see why I should pay them £30 for a quick letter??! Seems like they're taking the ****.

Thoughts!???

Can I refuse!??

Check your original contract - if you haven't agreed to pay it, you definitely don't have to pay.even if you have, it's possible that you could strike it down as an unfair term.

What lease? You've signed another tenancy agreement fixing you into a MINIMUM TERM OF 6 MONTHS?

The lettings agency have refered to it as a "supplementary lease".

Basically, my one year's contract expired, so they sent me a letter saying that I can end the contract with one month's notice, and the landlord can end my contract with 2 months notice.

They want £30 for a letter telling you what happens when the tenancy turns into a periodic one..
    Hmm. Cheek.

I'd write back and say "thanks but I knew that anyway"
    It's an unfair charge!

Ring shelter and ask them for what legal blurb you need to quote at them.

I am a Mortgage Consultant and don't like to be told what I can and can't put in a signature so long as it's legal and truthful.

Yes - they want to charge me £30 for 'administration costs'.

Shelter? The homeless charity place? They can offer me legal advice can they?

Thanks for the link - reading through that now.

    my highlighting.

As Ian says, that previous thread should give you some pointers but as with any forum always seek your own clarification.

Yes, Shelter helps the homeless, but it is a *housing* charity that deals with all sorts of issues that come under that heading. Its helpline number is 0808 800 444 (7 days, 8-8)

I sent off a letter to the LA 11 days ago, - no reply as yet......

    Dear xxxxx

Thank you for your letter dated 3rd October 2008.

The agreement has now become a "Periodic Agreement" whereby the Housing Act 1988 now applies. This is automatic and written in law, and as such there are no terms and conditions which can alter this. There is no mention of renewal or administrative fees in the contract I have with xxxxx, nor have I ever agreed to pay such a fee, therefore there is no fee payable. This must be an administrative error on your part, so I am returning the invoice to you.

For information, I sent a copy of this letter to xxxxx, the Landlady of 7 xxxxx.

    Yours sincerely

If you posted it they may claim they haven't received it.

In future when you send letters to companies who want to rip you off send the letter by two methods and state at the end of the letter in bold print both methods the letter has been sent by.

No reply? Obviously, you are are expected to pay in advance for a reply.

    To dissolve the people
    And elect another?
