in Energy
Well I think that's the phrase. After seeing Martin's advice numerous times about switching to a capped tariff for Gas and Electricity I decided to go to Eon via their on-line system about two months ago (may have been less than that). I was already with them for Electricity and so was switching from British Gas for the gas. I went for a dual energy capped service.
I received many, many letters from them some of which I read in full, others of which I gave a passing glance, One that I gave a passing glance to was headed "Thanks for choosing EnergyGuarantee 5 Plan".
Last week I got a letter saying my electricity prices were going up so I queried this and they tell me this plan just keeps my prices under BG's not capped. I'm complaining to them but I hold out little hope of help. They'll no doubt allow me to cap now but not at the rates I'd have got when I asked. I've told them I've got screenshots of the registration (which I haven't) and am putting the onus on them to produce their documents. I made no mistake in registering as my only reason to switch was to get the capped rates., Of course unless you're technically capable then there's no way of proving what went into the online system, I wonder if EON are obliged by law to keep the exact details?
Anyway this is just a warning to others if they are going to do things online which may have the same problem.

Is your elec on the capped?
They do write to confirm the changes and you can view your tariff online. I guess if you didn't check the deatils were correct you may not be able to encourage them to back date to the old price protection.0 -
The only thing they've confirmed are changes I didn't ask for, they send so many letters that there just isn't time to read them all. I guess I took the simplistic view that what I asked for is what I'd get. I'm still intrigued as to what records they keep of registration transactions and also where one can find their previously offered tariffs (eg the one I registered for).
I really can't see any reason why one would want to go for a tariff that's guaranteed to be below that of British Gas (when it was obvious to one and all that BG were going to raise their prices as were everyone else) instead of going for a capped price which would work out far cheaper than the new increased prices. Yes the prices may come down next year but it's still a big if and there's no saying how much they'll reduce them by.0 -
So, you will have got their email and letter confirming the 'energy product' you selected as that's the start of the 14 day cooling off period. If you didn't check it and don't have any screen grabs then I can't see you'll make progress.0

And these letters would be sent for a reason. Lots of people get confused between guarantee, fixed, capped, discounted etc so it's a helpful thing for the info to be posted as confirmation. If the agent who took the call got it wrong then the fail-safe is the letters they send you.0 -
Thanks for the responses and yes I should have checked every letter I got in full and didn't so that's my responsibility. I'm surprised that they don't appear to keep any record of the original online forms. I'll just have to bite the bullet this time and change again in 12 months if it's worthwhile (there' a payment to make if you come out of the agreement before 12 months). I suppose it might be OK if prices do come down early next year.0
