tax credits so called overpayment...

a year or so into tax credits when my daughter was but a baby tax credits was being paid but i either forgot to return a form or did but dont know what i did with the copy that i usually keep. now they are asking me back for the money of all of that year. If you forget to send back the form do you have to repay all of the year? is there any way out of it? as all of the information was accurate. thanks in advance.

  • no, if you dont do your renwal, that year is then void. As the money paid in a year is provisional based on the completion of a renewal, if a renewal isnt complete, the money paid in that year is then an overpayment. You broke your side of the Tax Credit 'contract'
Call 0845 302 1429 to set up a Direct Debit to repay the money.
the only debt left now is on credit cards! The evil loan has gone!! :j:j

Thanks everso for your info on the tax credits stuff. I have now worked out why they actually stopped my claim. As I was looking at being abroad for a bit I did not see the point of renewing (or rather I thought it was a renewal for the year ahead) so that is why I did not send back a form back in 2006 in September or I may not have received it as other letters went missing that year too (I may be able to dig out some proof on this front too).

I have only just realised now is that that form in 2006 was just to confirm that the details were in actual fact accurate which they were at the beginning of the year but as I was then going abroad i thought it would automatically stop from then on. any thoughts? also worth going to Citizens Advice Bureau as it represents quite a lot of money to pay back and not earning at the moment. thanks everso for your help. Kind regards

  • you should have informed them you were going abroad and still done the renewal. you have no way of winning a dispute against this, because you were at fault.
you need to ring the overpayments helpline. they can try and help you set up an amount you can afford.
