18185 users, check your BT bill carefully

Options
I have heard about 18185 on this website, and it has saved me a shed load of cash. However I have just been stung with a nasty fraud and I'm not sure where it originates.

I use a domestic PBX system which bars high rate phone calls, and adds the 18185 prefix to my outgoing calls. It also records the details of all calls and records the voice call to hard disk.

On September the 16th my wife rang a web hosting company in reading. The person who answered the phone sounded like they were overseas. This was unusual because the web hosting company insists that they only use UK based support staff.

The person at the end of the phone insisted that this was the company that she was dialing and kept her on the phone asking long unrelated questions questions and keeping her on the phone for 21 minutes and not being able to resolve her problem.

On receiving my latest BT bill, the call was not routed via 181850118XXXXXXX but was routed to 118501 international directory inquiries. The call came to £27.30 for a 21 minute call.

BT are insisting that this call was made intentionally. And I have to pay. This is not the case. If I were not running a PBX I might accept that this might have happened. But I have a computerised telephone system in my house which has been runnig for years. I know for a fact that call was not made. I even have the voice call of the fraudster extending the life of the call and impersonating another company.

1) I have a recorded voice call of someone impersonating the company my wife tried to call.

2) My PBX has call data going back to 2006, and the logs show that 181850118XXXXXXX was dialed and not 118501

Looking at the call data can see this has happened on 3 other occasions for smaller sums of money and I did not notice it. However this one got greedy and I spotted it.

I also found this thread

Which convinced me that something is not right. I have contacted 18185, and as usual I have not had any response as yet.

Check your BT bill carefully, you may be getting ripped off.
