Hi,
I use OneTel TalkTalk for my off peek calls and have just received a bill with a £1.50 charge for a call made to 118501. It was made at a time when the house would have been in madness due to kids clubs so we are convinced we did not make it. Besides I'm as tight as they come and would never call a number through a service like that. I've looked on Google and apparantly its an international directory enquiries number which again we would never use.
OneTel have confirmed:
· This is classified as a Directory Enquiry Services number.
· The service is provided by Crosby Communications Ltd.
· Affiniti Integrated Solutions Ltd runs the telephone number.
· The service is called Crosby International DQ.
· It is described as International Directory Enquiry Service; all countries.
OneTel say they've investigated and we definately made it. It's only once but I'm concerned it may happen again. Any advice? Should I bother to raise it with ICSTIS?
Thanks

It's only once but I'm concerned it may happen again. Any advice?Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Contact the ICSTIC because they can lie to you, if you are sure that you did not make the call then report it.0

The same thing has just happened to us. We're with BT but use 18185 as call provider. An £11-55 charge for a call to 118501 appeared on our last bill which neither myself or partner had made. We rang BT and they have given us £10-00 plus VAT off our bill 'as a good will gesture'. As this amounts to 20p MORE than the cost of the mystery call we accepted but got the feeling they didn't want us to enter the complaints procedure which my partner was threatening to do.0

I can see what's happening here.
For some reason the first 8 isn't been picked up by the phone / phone system and then you are dialling an 01.. number..
1 8 1 8 5 ... 0 1 miss the first 8 and it becomes 1 1 8 5 0 1.It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
I've just had the same problem. I have BT phone line but use 18185 for calls. My RECENT CALLS on the BT web shows a call to 118501 on Sept 4 2008 lasting over 30 minutes and costing more than £38!!
If I did dial a 18185 number (can't remember) but kept on dialling the rest of the number I wanted - I never had anyone ask me what number I was dialling and obviously I would never have used the 118501 to connect me!0 -

I use 18185 and the explanation by Fantastically Fervent looks plausible (1 - 185 + 01 ...). My bill was £6.95 for a call lasting 4.37 minutes. It reminds me that there have been spates of misdialled calls through 18185 even though the numbers are saved in my phone memory, so no question of finger trouble. Is it the phone, then? Or 18185? On this occasion, was it finger trouble? But how could a wrong number call last so long? I don't get it.0
