  • Northern Rock story would be nice to believe, but The Guardian has a different view:

That is not great, but much better than the other day when I thought I'd lost £16,000 for good.

Like you say, they don't quote their source. And there's no explanation behind it. It's just a throw-away comment. I therefore suggest its dismissed as unsubstantiated tittle-tattle.

Don't forget - the article is written by a journalist.............

The important thing is to get the money back. Christmas is 3 months away. And as per FSCS, it may take upto 3 months to get your money back.

So dont be surprised. All thanks to British government!
  • One thing that makes the Northern Rock solution plausible is that Icesave's UK offices aren't a million miles from Northern Rock's

Count me among those who can't get into their on line accounts. This is entirely my fault as I hadn't got round to ringing after I accidentally locked myself out a few weeks ago.

Has anyone here successfully got through to Icesave in the last couple of days? I gave up after about 15 minutes, and I can see that I've been a lot less patient than some here.

The FSCS page on the subject states that there should be more info on the arrangements by the end of the day so maybe we should just wait till then

If they've just decided to transfer all the accounts to another bank (this is, after all, what happened with Kaupthing Edge) it may not be too crucial to be able to log into the Icesave site anyway.

    Hi

What are your feelings on Kaupthing? I attempted to transfer my money out on the 7th, and it has not reached my bank! when you eventually talk to them they just say it is taking longer than normal, my worry is that its not in Kaupthing ( according to my statement) and its not in moninated bank:rolleyes: I also spoke to FSCS this morning, just to see if they could shed any light, I must have got the most rude and unhelpful individual around, all I can say is if we have to deal with theses people, then they are not all like her.

They are probably short tempered owing to the amount of calls they are receiving from people !
Your money is in limbo but now that ING has taken over KE they will be working on it. See the front screen on the KE site

I don't normally pass on rumors, and I want to stress that this is all it is (but I soooo hope it's true!)

I heard from a friend that one of the options the FSCS are considering is to use the account data from Icesave to open new accounts with Northern Rock.

    The advantages being:
    1. No one has to make a claim - eligable Icesave savers automatically get accounts opened using information they already hold
    2. FSCS can make a single payment to Northern Rock (not 300,000 individual cheques)
    3. The "cash" from FSCS can be phased as some/many Icesave savers may decide to leave the money in Northern Rock, but obviously if you want to transfer it you can do
    4. Any paperwork (relating to transfers) would then be handled by Northern Rock staff, where there is excess capacity as they aren't doing much mortgage business.

IF (and I stress again IF) true, payouts (at least on paper) could be achieved in a couple of weeks instead of months!

    I really hope they do!

This would be great if it happened. But wouldn't this put NR above their 1.5% limit. I think they are already at their limit, as they are not opening any new accounts at the moment. By transferring our money across would put us at an unfair advantage. Shame, cos good idea

That actually makes more sense especially if they decide to do everything in the usual bureaucratic way. They do have 3 months by EU law to sort it and I bet it takes all of that and more

It will be interesting to see what the FSCS come up with

For info on another site someone has had confirmation from the FSCS that accrued and uncredited interest will be paid up to the point the bank failed assuming they can recover the information from Icesave

Finally got through after 1 hour on hold, and managed to get my account unlocked. Happier now I have a record of what was in my account.
