Sounds like the first 50k will be safe then - that should cover the vast majority of people.

I'm not saying anyone was reckless. Savings accounts are one of the most safe investments. However they are not 100% safe.

It is also true that some banks are safer than others. What made you decide that Iceland was a safe place for your money?

you say we are daft to have put our money with a UK approved bank Superted...

well if the financial industry cannot honour to give me back my money i give them, maybe i can decide that I do not have to honour and give back the money they lent me for my mortgage.... sounds like a deal to me

You didn't give your money to the financial industry you gave it to a particular bank. You can tell it was an individual entity by the way it was able to give you an attractive interest rate.
    .
When the bank decides to give you £xxxk as a mortgage they do a credit check on you, ask about your income etc.... Thats how they predict you will be able to give it back. It is the responsibility of you as a lender of money to Icesave to think about how they will pay you back.
    .
I agree the FSA etc... could have done more to make it easier for you to make this decision.

MSE Dan, instead of spouting political stuff that's been fed to you, have you actually researched what receivership means in Iceland and the likely effect that will have on its credit obligations. From your post, I suspect not.

Have you also asked the government (ours and theirs) and Icesave, where they are going to get the money to pay the compensation out ? They DON'T HAVE THE MONEY. You know that and I know that.

And they very deliberately took this step to avoid triggering the compo rules - do you think that was an accident ? Ask yourself (on behalf of thousands of MSEers) why ? And then come back with your thoughts, rather than just posting placatory vague statements....

[apologies for the direct approach, but I genuinely think you need a rocket for that post]

I withdrew £16,000 from my Icesave ISA last night. Have checked balance today, and i'ts left Icesave account. Do you think it will actually be credited?

I have read several different accounts about this but bottom line is you will just have to wait 3/4 days if it isn't credited to your receiving bank it will be credited back into your Icesave account

You are missing the point. No one WANTS your commentary or advice - we just want you to stop others feeling like schit. You are behaving like an uncompassionate fool ... and I suspect you are getting a weird kick out of it. Do you not think many on here regret keeping their money with Icesave? Of course they do!!

All we would like you to do is crawl back under the rock you came from.

    SUPERTED . or super muppet

    you write this earlier

"But eventually the buck stops with the account holder.
Repeating that you want your owned property back does not change the fundamental objective reality which is that you gave your money to people that could not be trusted with it. Sorry."

Therefore to people that have worked a long time to save this money through hard work and following advice of the UK financial industry and a number of established web sites to put their money in this bank, when you write the above YOU ARE inferring that we are reckless and it is our fault, that is why today in the faced with the worry and risk of us losing years worth of effort we don't really appreciate you telling us that it is our stupidity that cost us when we followed the advice of the standard industry. We understand nothing in life is 100% safe ever, but we do not feel like we have been reckless in the way you infer, especially not TODAY.
  • I too set up a BACS transfer of the last little bit of money i'd left in my account last night. Today it says the transfer has been processed and my current balance is 0, but i guess i'll have to wait 'til Thursday or friday to see whether it's gone through.

Previous posts here say conflicting things about whether the money is likely to go through or not... Does anyone understand the system and know the likelihood of it materialising in a couple of days time? Fingers crossed!

Superted I'm not getting into an arguement but Icesave has been recommended by all leading websites/newspapers/ etc for some time as the best place to put cash. Ok I may have been stupid not to have checked further but surely at some point we have to rely on experts? I got caught on this a few years ago when a solictor messed up a conveyancing and their reply was that we should have checked - we sued them and won!
