Condensation?? (merged threads)

Nobody seems to have addressed the reason why some of us do not get condensation and others do. Dehumidifiers are only masking the reason. Either our houses are better insulated and heated or there has to be some other reason, which needs exploring.
As I have said before, I never open a window in the winter, so it is not ventilation that is causing or stopping the condensation. There has to be a logical explanation. That is why I suggested in my earlier post that people compare with other households to try to find out what is different between them. There must be experts out there who know more about these things, and can offer an explanation.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Useful info there Ormus but when you are lifting stuff wholesale from another website you should display it as a quote & credit the origin, or just link to it perhaps . Home Repairs?0

Getting some trickle vents fitted and a few rooms are having the PVC windows in the units replaced.
Had thought also about getting a few extra air bricks fitted on the outside walls, what do you reckon??0 -
Woke up this morning to the sound of dripping in the bedroom, was the condensation from the window gathering on the ledge and then running down the walls...
The upstairs windows in the house ALWAYS have condensation on them, its becoming to be a real problem as its leading to wet walls and also mould.
What could be causing the condensation and whats the best way to tackle the problem? My dad seems to think its due the house being too well insulated...0 -
A normal household generates a lot of moisture in the very fact of boiling water, cooking and every breath you exhale.
You need to allow that moisture to escape. You can ventilate or use a dehumidifier.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
How old is the house? Is it a new build?0

I suffer the same problem in this house, which is mid-terraced 1920's house. If I keep the dehumidifer chugging away during the days, during the Oct-Feb period, then it will usually fill up about twice a day.
The instant I start cooking with water (ie: boiling veg), the windows steam up - and I know that I'll have to run the window blade along the window at night, to lessen the effect of night condensation.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0 -
Its approaching 50 years old, it was built in the 60s... its an ex council house, of Laing - easyform build.0

Difficult one to deal with, try making sure that you open windows in the kitchen when cooking, also when using the shower/bath but don't leave open longer than required as I believe damp air will then be drawn in from outside. Do you have lots of laminate floors? I believe sometime that lack of carpets etc means there's nothing to "absorb" moisture so it just forms on hard surfaces. Drip vents on windows are supposed to help, you may have windows where the drip vent is in the form of a settin on the main handle which allows you to close/lock the window with a tiny gap left open. I used to get mould in my bathroom even when leaving the window open but found that leaving the door open helped as the dampness was distrubuted throughout the house without problems rather than being concentrated in one room so perhaps leaving the bedroom door slighly open might help.0

I've found it more of as problem now I've got the really thick curtains up.
The window blade is a great idea, so thank you. I got one for the car a couple of weeks ago from Home Bargains 99p, but I'll take it upstairs instead.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.
