Installation of central heating

My house doesn't have central heating. It's a 3 bed semi. Does anyone have any idea how much it is likely to cost to have it installed? I live on the borders of Kent and South East London. Also, how long does it take them to do?

pinklady,
It might be helpful if you could give more details of your property, to enable one of the regulars to give you a rough ball park figure of installation costs.

Is your property already connected to the gas mains? If not, how far away is the mains as Transco will charge based on distance to connect you.
We have just been quoted about £3000 for replacing an existing system (all pipework, new combi-boiler and radiators) in a 3 bed terrace, but we're in the South West where I guess labour charges are lower.
The plumber recommended waiting until spring - more people want this kind of thing done when winter is on the way, so prices tend to drop a bit once the weather warms up!0 -
It's a 3 bedroom semi detached house. The kitchen is 3m x 2m, the living room is 23ft x 11ft, bedroom 1 and bedroom 2 are 12ft x 11ft, bedroom 3 is a small box room, not sure of its measurements. The bathroom is about 1m x 2.5m. Sorry my measurements aren't all in metres/ft but I can't remember some of the measurements in metres.0

This time of year it could be 4.5k.0 -
The cost will depend on what you require. A decent installer will spend a bit of time talking you through the various options and discsussing your needs. In a house such as yours, most would likely suggest a combi boiler, this will usually be the cheapest option. There are various points you should be on the look out for. If you're in England or Wales, in most cases it will be compulsory to fit a condensing boiler. You should also ensure the central heating will incorporate a timer and room thermostat, and thermostatic valves on all radiators, except the one closest to the room stat. The contractor should allow for cleansing and treating the system with a corrosion inhibitor, and should allow time to correctly balance the system. The installation will need to be certified to building control, which all Corgi registered installers should be able to do on your behalf, for which you should recieve a certificate up to a month after the installation has been completed.
The time of year shouldn't make any difference to the price whatsoever, you may just have to wait a little longer. A mid-range combi and six rads shouldn't normally cost any more than £3K, including all the aforementioned (and I'm also in Kent/SE London). A conventional system would cost considerably more.
Make sure you hire someone you feel you can trust.0 -
Hi, need to get central heating fitted in my house. This would be the first time central heating would be put in so there is need for removing any old pipes, radiators boiler…etc.
I just would like to know how long roughly would it take to fit central heating to a small 3 bedroom semi, would only need 6 radiators I would think.
Any idea’s?0 -
Our house took a weekend with two plumbers but it's 2 bedroom terraced. Combi boiler and 7 rads.0

... had gas central heating fitted a couple of years ago and I think it only took two or three days. It was a complete new fit because there was E7 in the house. 8 radiators and boiler fitted and had the hot water tank removed.0

I have a 2 bedroomed terrace house which had no heating in it at all previous to me having the central heating put in. I had 5 rads, pipes and boiler put in and it took about 8 days but he was here from 7am to 6pm all those days and it cost me £1,000.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

I would allow a week and be happy if it took less.
A friend in Manchester had a similar system done recently
(7 rads +combi) with 2 fittters it took 4 days.
Obviously if you are not going the combi route then it would probably take longer as more time is required to fit tanks etc.0
