hi,

can anyone give me a rough idea of how much it will cost for a new car battery, in a citroen xsara, 1.4 petrol. Mine has totally died, am hopefully getting it jumpstarted tomorrow so i can at least drive to a garage, but am panicking that it will be way beyond my means!

many thanks

many thanks steve. is that just for the battery, or for fitting as well?

ive never paid to have one fitted so its the battery on its own..it shouldnt be difficult to fit, im sure if you ask around a relative or friend could do it for you

Fitting is easy the only problems come from not having the radio code which you may need to get the radio to work after it has lost power.

£45 min. But if you swap your battery you might get a tenner off.

    Fit it yourself.

ermmm, not sure i would even know what the battery looks like! (i know, i know...... i'm useless!) On the bright side though, i am seriously considering a motor maintenance course at my local fe., when my health gets better!

thanks for all your advice though, i will ring garage tomorrow (who is kind of a family friend) and ask him, as he normally only charges me 'mates rates' for work on my car.

If he charges you more than a pound to change your battery he is not charging mates rate but doing you from behind. Twice.

hey, come on, look at the old battery when its on, (take a digi photo) if you like, put the new one in exactly the same way, it really is easy peasy.
    ive even done one
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Although it should be mentioned that you may need a socket and extension and ratchet handle to reach the bolt, you should also wear gloves if the battery is corroded, and you'll certainly need tools to remove the clamps. Then you'll have to drive to the tip to dispose of the battery.

So really, a charge for replacement isn't a ripoff at all.
