Cons of a granite worktop + which sink?

I'm planning the long overdue refit of my kitchen and we have decided that we really want to add the wow factor of granite worktops.

What I want to know though is are there any disadvantages of granite?

Also I really like the inset sinks (that fit under the worktop) rather than the sit on type. Has anyone experienced the granite around the inset sink suffering any kind of water damage or is it really impervious to anything and everything???

  • Aberdeen is built out of this stuff, if it's good enough for the North Sea weather patterns it's good enough for your kitchen.Seriously though, it's a good choice you've made.

It won't be affected by water!

The only slight downside of an undermount sink is that it sits on clips under the worksurface. Water is quite heavy so there's a possibility that you won't get a completely watertight seal. I'm sure it's not that bad but we had the conversation in front of the granite man when he came to measure up and he said his preference would be to overmount, so we did. You can buy lovely overmount sinks anyway. We have a black granite like sink which I really wanted after seeing another poster's sink on here :)

We almost went for overmount, but imo it ruins the line of the granite.....so at the last minute we wentfor undermount and it looks fab,had no issues with water or seal.
  • Granite looks great. Go for Undermount sink as well - I don't know how they are fitted, but if done right they don't leak (mine never did)
  • Look at 1.5 bowl undermount sinks. I have just done our kitchen and the sink comes with a wide lip so that it sat on the sides of the base unit.

When the granite fitters came, they simply ran sealant round the top once the worktop was in place.
  • Thanks for all the replies. Can any of you advise how much it costs to have the sink undermounted and a draining board cut into the granite? The undermount sink itself is about £200.

Also can anyone advise of a granite company in Kent to do the work?

You can get a quote online, including the cuts you want and they will come out anywhere in the country. They are fabulous. Very quick and well priced.

Isn't granite pourous ie it stains but this is prevented by a top layer that needs replaceing every so often?
