I think you are misunderstanding what I am saying, I spoke to Npower, in regards to moving to them, they are happy to install a E7 meter as I dont wish to stay on the tariff I was on previously (Heatwise/E10)

do you reckon? I think it seems like quite alot in all honesty, for what I have plugged in anyway

The average property in UK that doesn't use Electricity for heating/hot water/cooking uses 9kWh a day. Many of use use a lot more.

Just electric Hot water - let alone heating - will use several kWh a day.

Thanks to both the OP (I'd never seen an electric boiler setup before so the pictures are good) and even though I don't think I'll need to know the detail Premiers answer looks a cracking reply. Certainly worthy of the 'thanks' button on the bottom right of the post in my view tsw004 (of Premiers posts).

Indeed, premiers post was really helpful. I'm new to the forum and hadn't noticed that thanks button so I've just added my thumbs up.
  • Hi guys,

sorry to jump in on this but I have some questions that i think you guys should be able to answer.....
I have a system very similar to tsw004's - an immersion heater and the exact same Aztec boiler - in my new rented flat. The boiler has the same Drayton switch but with an extra button so I can turn on hot water or heating, or both.
The flat is big (very high ceilings, 2 big bedrooms, long corridor, separate bath and toilet) and last month i paid £140 for heating and water, and the weather wasn't cold.....
However, I was using both the immersion and the Aztec boiler. I am not doing this any more.... The boiler seem to provide instant hot water at the taps as well as feeding the immersion storage tank. The boiler doesn't give enough heat to have a shower (the water has to go a long way) and so I tend to have it on for an hour or a bit more before I have a shower. I also have it on for a short time in the morning. Do you think having hot water AND heating on will cost more, as the boiler will be less efficient at each job? Would using the immersion be cheaper for hot water? Any tips about efficient use would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jon

  • Love it! you can just use your light sabre to heat water anyway.
  • I'm glad I found this thread. We just moved into a rented place too and the boiler is just like tsw004's except we only have the red funny expansion tank thingy, lol! We have an immersion and I wondered why we have both (boiler and immersion heater) when I can set the hot water and heating to come on at the boiler? I thought the immersion was just a back up in case the boiler packed up. Can someone enlighten me?

We put the hot water to come on for 20 minutes in the early hours every day and that provides enough hot water for 2 showers. It seems to use 4 units of electric. I looked at tsw004's photos and had to check our water tank. There is an immersion at the top of the tank which is switched off and the immersion at the bottom is wired into the boiler circuit which comes on when the Siemens timer kicks in.

The heating is very expensive with this set up as a couple of people have mentioned. We had our first electric bill for £101 just for 5 weeks usage. I wasn't even having the heating on every day and I was only putting two radiators on for 2 hours at a time when needed. The next place we move to will have to have gas central heating as the costs with electric are astronomical.
