  • we are lucky i collect all our wood every day from the beach, there is always more than we can burn in a day. the garage is half full of wood we have picked up from the beach. it does need to be dried out of course but all free and that's the best bit.

I could be wrong, but I think they might have stopped these due to H & S rubbish.... (Hope I am wrong!)

I looked this up and as you suspected they are incredibly hard to get hold of for H&S reasons  - not that I'd be contemplating taking a chain saw anyway - it was more for stray bits to pick up.

what about your local industrial sites they sometimes have pallats lying around, a quick word may find you a regular supply.

Thanks :T, we have this covered and also checking skips as quite a few people seem to be having work done around here.

Do you have a Jewson's locally  Here, they sell those huge sacks (the 1m cube ones) full of offcuts for about £10 - £20.

    Penny. x

I'll have to check on that one Penny, but so far we are doing well via Freecycle so haven't spent any money on wood at all :j:j:j. What is more, people seem incredibly glad to see us as we are taking away stuff that they'd have to arrange special collections for - like a wooden bed base and a tree trunk (nicely dried out from last year).

We are going to try this too, as we live near the coast. In fact when we were first married, my DH used to gather coal from the beach for our open fire. So there we sat on two deck chairs with just a bakelite radio and a damned good fire-guard as it used to spit like mad. Those were the days! No double-glazing and only our love to keep us warm - thankfully it still does, thirty-odd years later ;).

Once again thanks to everyone for the suggestions, it's wonderful the lovely helpful people you meet on here :T:T:T.

We're both committed to getting through this next winter as cheaply as possible and the main cost for everyone these days seems to be gas and electricity, so the heating is only on for half an hour in the morning and the multi-fuel-burner goes on in the evening. When it gets really cold, we'll add coke to keep it on over-night, but at present it seems wasteful so we'd rather hang on to the reserves we are building up.

    Love,

    I'm in too!!!

I notice you are in wiltshire like me, which makes me wonder.... I'm wondering if enough people in got together near each other if they could get discounts on bulk orders with multiple drops? It might not be as good as free, or even a huge discount, but anything is something, right? Bulk purchase is working for some people with oil drops and gas ordering....could it work for we who use wood?

yes, I know that's what it says. It was a typo in a post that made a chum here have the same reaction so I leave it in my sig to brighten her day. Its going to change one of these days. I think the other thing was my typo too. I make loads of really goofy typos that make people grin. :)

I thought this might be the best place to ask ;) does anyone have any ideas on where to get cheap or possibly free logs/wood for a multi-fuel burning stove?

I've tried my local B&Q and wood merchants to ask about buying off-cuts - so far without any luck. A neighbour has his own joinery business so he passes on any scraps, plus window frames, even the odd door etc. if he is doing a re-furb. However with the credit crunch we really need to be sourcing additional supplies for the winter.

    Many thanks

Have you got local woods nearby its surprising what you can fit into a rucksack, you can take my dog for a walk as well :rotfl:

although you might not think so - but that wood belongs to somebody - so by helping yourself, regardless of how little or much you took - would infact be theft. it might seem petty - but you just can't go around helping yourself to other peoples property - regardless of how insignificant
saving money by growing my own - much of which gets drunk
    made loads last year

As I dont have a log burner its not me doing the taking. But I meet lots of people who do. Nobody has ever been told they cant or been prosecuted.

Our local sawmill gives away slabbing - the stuff sawn off the sides of trunks when they are making planks etc. Awkward to cut but usually good hardwood stuff.

Tree surgeons, landscape gardeners, builders are all worth a try - be careful though, some of the stuff will be bad to burn.

How big is your rucksack? My woodburner does a wheelbarrow load of logs a day!!
  • I asked my local farmer if my children and I could clear any old wood from his land. What I did not know was that he had just had a new power line put in though his land from a wind farm. There is tons and tons of it cut into 2m lengths. So much that I have bought a trailer and a chain saw. Just a bit of luck for once. Have a look around your area for the same.
