I thought this might be the best place to ask
does anyone have any ideas on where to get cheap or possibly free logs/wood for a multi-fuel burning stove?
I've tried my local B&Q and wood merchants to ask about buying off-cuts - so far without any luck. A neighbour has his own joinery business so he passes on any scraps, plus window frames, even the odd door etc. if he is doing a re-furb. However with the credit crunch we really need to be sourcing additional supplies for the winter.
Many thanks

Hi Unity,
It might be worthwhile posting on your local freecycle. Or this thread might help:

Thanks for this Pink . I have one of the cylindrical log makers which I use to 're-cycle' junk mail and any shredded bills etc. I hadn't thought of Freecycle though so thank you for the link - I'll do that right away. Some people hear voices, some see invisible people. Hi Unity,
I found another one that might be useful but I've never used it so can't vouch for it: www.dontdumpthat.org.uk

Maybe offer your services for pruning trees in exchange for the logs?I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -
Look for the local council contractors working on the trees etc on the side of the road and ask them??
Ask at the local tip, see if they collect wood in a seperate container, maybe they could let you have some??
Ask the local woodland trust, if you are near one.
Look in builders skips then ask before you take anything??Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100 / 100miles

Wood will soon be harder to find I recon. The paper said that there has been a 40% increase in the sale of woodburners, so everyone will be looking for logs. I live near a wooded area and go hunting just after high winds for dead falls. I got lucky last year as they cleared out a copse near us and all the wood was free to takers (with permission). I got a nice pile that should last 4 years....
A builders merhcants nearby gives away all it's broken pallets. So you just have to be on the look out. The beach is also a good palce to pick up wood, but it does spit a lot in the fire so beware.NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0 -
Hi Unity, rather than the merchants who are trying to make every penny by selling the stuff, try ringing round any joinery shops/woodworkers/barfitters that are listed in yellow pages or local paper.
They will have to pay to dispose of waste, so they may have some. Be prepared to cut it and transport it yourself.
Possibly double glazing firms as they remove old window frames. You would have to be aware of broken glass and the possibility of lead paint.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -
Get to know your local woodturner lol. My stepdad turns wood, and he often has a lot of wood that he's dried out but that turns out to be no good for turning. My grandad uses it in his wood burner, but if you can find a local woodturner they might be willing to give you their offcuts and 'rubbish', as storage is always a problem.0

Contact the nearest district office of the Forestry Commission, and ask about their Firewood Scavenging Permits:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

We find most of our wood in skips around our area, recently someone had their roof refitted and we got some really nice planks - some of them were too good to burn so they went to make a border for our garden raised beds!
CaterinaFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0
