It might fix it if the problem is with corrupted firmware...

Firmware doesn't get corrupted in normal use. The only time you can corrupt the firmware is when you update it.

Signal keeps disconnecting....despite me being sat 2 foot from the router..

In all the cases of this I've seen, it's been the drivers for the wifi dongles if it drops then reconnects for a few minutes before dropping again. Otherwise if it's the router, it's a hardware failure (usually on Belkins) and no amount of firmware upgrading will cure that.

I would REALLY advise against updating router firmware. if it goes wrong (As it did with me once) you end up with a DEAD router!

ive updated my routers firmware with no after effects, how are you connected to the router

ive updated lots of netgear routers with never a problem.
also done bt home hubs. updated and reset them to older versions, again no problems.
as been said, your problem is more likely to be the dongle/wireless card sw/drivers etc...
    Get some gorm.

Patchy wireless reception can be down to anything first and foremost try changing the channel it uses, failing that try moving the areial to a different position as in the angle it points or moving the router etc.
Sometimes updating the firmware can improve wireless reception with certain cards but that would depend on the card and the router firmware version as to wether or not there where issues with it. "they release new firmware to add new features and correct problems etc"

My mates laptop did EXACTLY that, the internal wireless was c*ap
I would suggest trying a usb dongle out (get em for about a tenner off ebay)

it's not a firmware problem, get cable and wireless to change the router. Firmware will not fix the disconnection problem if it used to be fine before.
