I have a few questions about the new ipohne satnav feature. Have looked at loads of youtube vids so have a vague answer, i just want to be sure.

1) I know it doesn't have a speaking tomtom style satnav, but are there applications which we can get to install on the iphone.?
2) Do i need to be in a wifi area to use the gps feature or will maps work without wifi.??
3) Is the maps feature completely free??

thanks alot in advance

Garmin is reportedly working on a satnav application for the iPhone which should be out by the end of this year. I would imagine TomTom would come up with something as well. The big thing they have to get around is the iPhone not having a memory card slot and Apple permitting USB syncing only through iTunes, both of which impede the loading of maps onto the phone.

Google maps will work with or without a data connection (be it 3G or Wi-fi). The GPS radio will still function but you may find it takes considerably longer to lock on to your location as it will not be downloading base station triangulation data or GPS satellite location data (which give your phone a rough idea of where it is so the GPS radio can narrow its location search).

Google Maps is free to use on the iPhone; you only pay for any data usage charges. Since O2's iPhone plan includes unlimited data access, however, using Maps in the UK is therefore free. Using it overseas will incur those exorbitant data roaming charges.
