I don't know if you are able to modify these V-bulletin forums to suit every purpose you want to, or if you are restricted to only modifying certain features from preset options supplied by V-bulletin
BUT...
1. Wouldn't it be cool if when you ignore a user you don't see any of their posts at all? At present you are faced with a visible post "you are ignoring this user". I believe if you ignore a user you should not see any of their posts and if they start a new thread that whole thread should be invisible to you.
2. Also I would like to see a section like the 'thanked by' section under everyones posts, saying "this user is ignoring 15 users" and you can click on it to show all the users they ignore.
3. Also every user would have under their avatar, "Ignored xxx Times".
That way we could really put a lot of the trolls to sleep. Seeing as MSE does not care about trolls on their site abusing other users who are asking qu's for help or users answering, offering help to those qu's
You (MSE Abuse Team) could also use this feature to view the top offenders and ban them.

There would certainly be some long posts if your signature included all of your ignores!!0

It would be clickable like the "show thanks" is now.0 -
the best way to rid of trolls and others who abuse is to report them and I think we should use our own judgement and not depend on what someone else thinks about the person because we all have our moments of mistaking a person - it would be so wrong to label anyone
so may be best to simply report as and when we find an offensive post0 -
Unfortunately there are so many trolls on certain boards, and the 'report post'
function does not work for everyone, because MSE refuses to bring it 'in house' for no good reason.
It appears the staff of MSE don't care about abusive trolls who don't want to help people but are intent on just causing trouble - which of course is the nature of a troll -
But thanks for your input on this thread, which I really have no expectation of it being changed, I just wanted to make a few points about trolls. I don't think there can be any reasonable objections to my Idea No. 1 - can there be?0 -
Unfortunately there are so many users ignoring others simply because they do not share the same views (and are far from being trolls), that this facility would stigmatise perfectly legitimate users who have the misfortune of not being liked by a few people merely because they hold unpopular opinions.
Just an idea.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
Actually we care very much about the smooth runnig of the forum, and I hate the fact some people try and disturb the flow of conversation.
Yet to have a negative vote type button and then display it, would, in my view, make things much worse - it would lead to "who's ignoring me" - "im not a troll" complaints and lots of bad blood.
It would also lead to a strange flow of posts... you wouldn't be able to see what'd been said and the reaction - and this would lead to more confusing discussions.
If someone is trolling please do report them to abuse. They will get rid of them. The problem is sometimes people simply have an opposite viewpoint and some define them as 'trolls' and complain when its simply a polemic issue.
Overall though, the good news is we have a extra developer starting in a week who will only work on the forum. The aim is to gain a specialty so we can upgrade and customise the forum better. This won't be instant, but in the long run it should enable us to provide some better technological solutions to the problems.

I thank you for your reply. It would not be necessary for me to suggest that we make our 'ignore lists' public if MSE was more proactive in removing trolls from the site. You don't have to call them 'trolls' but there are people here whose only purpose (or the majority of their posts) for attending the MSE forum is to pour scorn onto others.
I'll tell you the board I am on about, it is the Warnings and ripoffs and Vent board. If you spend some time in those boards I defy you to find the general behaviour and nature of posts from a lot of users to be acceptable.
Something is going wrong in your policy on 'policing' when time after time after time after time a user-OP comes to these boards and ends up posting something like this in their thread.I have to say that I posted this originally in the hope that it would help someone and stop it happening to anyone else - not for any holier than thou smug replies from people basically calling my husband greedy and stupid. That is not the idea of this forum I thought. For those people that it has helped - GREAT !!
or thisYou really have gone too far.
WHY on earth would I come on here asking for advice on a fictional situation? Where would that get me !!!!!!? I'm a regular poster on this forum (on the old style and weddings boards) and I have NEVER come across such !!!!!iness and backstabbing as on this board. You should be ashamed!
<snip>
Don't judge others by your own standards - troll!
or thisPlease don't bother replying with any more sarcastic back stabbing comments. You might find it fun but it's not what this site is supposed to be about. I am sure that even if Martin thought I was a complete idiot he wouldn't start to say things like some of you have...especially the comment about red heads!!

There was me thinking this was a friendly helpful site, how wrong i was, you certainly know how to make newbies welcome NOT!!!!
Don't worry i won't be back you can shove your so called advice.

Most of us are here to help each other - I only asked whether I had some form of right to get the printer which I'd bought - there was no need to question my ability, technical knowlege or integrity - just a simple answer would have done. I only put the post on the vent board, because I couldn't find anything relevant - I was not trying to vent anything - unlike some of the people here - may I suggest that some of you get a life!
I will now ask the moderators to delete this post as rather than provide some useful information, it only shows how ignorant some people on this site can be.

We have reached an amicable agreement which brings this to an end. Thank you to all those who helped and offered advice and thank you to the few out there who gave us a laugh. Goodbye to the vent board for me - too many "Trolls"

I can understand sending abuse to people that complain purely to see what financial gain they can make out of the circumstances, I am not one of those people. If you haven't got anything constructive to add then why just post replies that are rude accusational and very arrogant?
I can't be bothered to find any more of them, but there are hundreds of them. If you don't want this to be the impression people get from this forum, if I were you I would boot these trouble makers, you don't owe them any explanation - but it would be better if you told them their attitude is unwanted on this forum. - to clarify I am talking about the trolls who caused the posters (above) to write what they did.
And the thing is that it is always the same posters causing the trouble, time after time after time, and MSE does nothing, this is the ugly face of MSE0 -
I have reported what I felt was an abusive post and it's diasppeared so thank you to who ever did this. I guess I ahve learnt a lesson not to take things too personally. Those who are intent on upsetting people must have very sad and lonely lives and should be pittied. I think Mr Sports knows who I am talking about!!0

Sometimes its just best to avoid a thread if the person who you dont agree with or have trouble with0

It's not me I'm concerned about. these trolls attack OPs who are if not new to MSE then new to the Vent board. I generally answer an OP in as much of a polite and professional manner as I can. The trolls generally abuse the OPs at any opportunity. I try to only step in to alert the OPs that these trolls are not worth getting angry with.
I don't think it is acceptable that so many OPs have to put up with the abuse that is given out on those boards.0
