How do I deposit a cheque without a branch nearby?

I joined the A&L and closed my HSBC account recently, however I did not realise there wasn't a branch in my town. The nearest branch is 20 miles away, this isn't a problem for me 95% of the time. I use online banking and that's enough for me, the only time I ever need a branch is when I have a cheque to desposit... which I happen to have now...
What do I do?
If push comes to shove I'll just throw it into my savings account and transfer the money across.

I stick cheques in the post to the branch with a note written on the back asking them to pay it into my account (quoting the account number). Or, include a bank giro credit with them.43580

Phone them up and ask for a supply of envelopes.
You have to send all cheques to A&L through the post.
Or you can use your own envelope.
Fill in the deposit slip from your cheque book
address :-
Alliance & Leicester plc
Customer Transactions
BOOTLE
Merseyside
GIR OAA
Either way you need a stamp!!
If you have a Post Office near you , then you can follow the above but you don't need a stamp, just hand it in over the counter. (The P.O. have a bag that goes every day directly to Meresyside)0 -
It's very easy to pay in the way Horsechestnut describes above, at the Post Office, it's what I always used to do. If you hand over the envelope at the counter, you also get a receipt for it.0

Does anyone know if there is a similar facility for posting cheques to be credited to an HSBC current account?
Thanks,"According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way that a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway. Because bees don't care what humans think is impossible" Bee Movie 20070 -

Thanks,
Some people can and do post cheques through regular mail enclosed with a credit slip to the branch address. Others actually put *cash* in an envelope and stick it through our letterbox... I wouldn't recommend either, to be honest, as so much could go wrong, but you're welcome to do so (at your own risk, obviously).
If you do this, they'll probably be put in and sent off with the rest of that days cheques.0 -

Not exactly. They can be intercepted and altered, and some cashiers may not be paying enough attention to see the problems with said alterations. That and, of course, they can get lost in the post, with all the fun that ensues, and the bank won't be able to accept responsibility or anything in that event.
Like I said, you CAN do it, but it's at your own risk.0 -
