I live in the Midlands, so have done most that you mention. I prefer Cheshire Oaks to Swindon.
Bicester is a waste of time, very expensive and great if you are a size 10!
My other suggestion would be Darbyshire, within a short drive of each other there is a MacArthur Glen Outlet (with M&S) at Mansfield; Peak Village at Romsley, De Bradelei at Belpher, also several smaller factory shops, and outlet shops at a Mill near Matlock that I can't remember the name of!
  • Here's another vote for Cheshire Oaks. Far more shops than the McArthur Glen outlet in York. I managed to get most of my Xmas presents there in one mass shop a couple of years ago, whilst staying at the Holiday Inn at Ellesmere Port in a £50 a night room. (Kept going back to dump all the bags!)

  • hi everyone,

thanks for all the replies. I think its probably down to either Swindon or Portsmouth.

Can I ask for some examples of discounts - e.g. I notice there is a Tommy Hilfiger shop in Swindon, how much approx for a man's casual shirt (not a t-shirt, but not a formal black tie)?

What about a handbag from Next that would normally cost £50?

I just want to make sure its worth my while coming all the way over - I was in the States last year and I know I am totally spoilt by how cheap stuff was over there - my partner practically turned INTO Tommy Hilfiger after he came home, he bought so much stuff LOL! And all for about 300 dollars, you'd be lucky to get a shirt & pair of trousers for that here in Ireland.

    Thanks again

Bicester is just very expensive and not for the cost-conscious whether times are good or bad. I wasn't too impressed with Cheshire Oaks either, mainly because nothing screamed "buy me". McArthur Glen may be a better choce, I have found some real bargains there.

In general it is a good time to come to the UK as sterling is doing so poorly against the Euro.

Not being petty but Cheashire Oaks is a McArthurGlen Outlet.

  • Bluewater is just an hours train journey from central London, its in Greenhithe in Kent, and then Lakeside is just over the river Thames from Bluewater, probably 20 mins by car/bus. Both worth a visit!

My vote goes to Cheshire Oaks (massive) and Gunwharf Quays (Portsmouth). Hatfield Galleria isn't all that great in my opinion - loads of shops are empty there at the moment.
