PAYG sim card only for emergency use
I use T-mobile pay as you go on a Nokia and would like to have a second, alternative SIM card for a PAYG to maximise my chances of coverage (getting a signal) in event of urgent need. I am based in York (North Yorkshire) & coverage seems a little patchy in some areas ( home included - though I guess this may be to do with electrical equipment in the house ) especially to the north. Of course cost of calls is important - no good running out of credits during an urgent call - but not so significant as it is only for occasional use (I hope !!).
I do not really want a contract as my usage is low & I have heard so many tales of woe involving lost or stolen phones & cloning where people have had to battle for months to get the provider to drop claims for huge charges.

wait for vodaphone to do free sims, order a couple, each comes with £2 free on them. Use them once every 6 months.Originally Posted by richardjames73

O2 have good coverage and only require a call every 6 months to stay active - and the sims are frequently available free!
Just to check though - your phone is unlocked I presume (not everyone knows about locking)0 -
As you can see from these replies, free SIM offers come round on all networks from time to time. A call every 6 months to keep active seems to be similar for most networks.
You should probably go for one of the three above or Tesco, as easyMobile, Virgin, fresh are virtual networks on T-mobile (Tesco on O2).
I'd suggest O2 for preference, for the inclusive minutes package for £10 top-up, then the value still remains. There is also a Joining Treats offer which will give you free minutes for 3 months, and read this thread ...

... for your level of use, your starting credit will certainly last 4 months before you spend any of it.0 -

Yes, easily the stupidest thing a basic no frills operator could do - charge 75p per month for low usage (mind you I used mine over £5.00 in the last three months & they still charged me 75p. Over 24 hours later (including a real-life CS person agreeing) it's not yet been credited back.
Still, at least they answered quickly - I had to put aside a hour for Virgin CS.0
