Broadband Useage Monitor

Options
I have been told by BT that they cannot tell me how much data I use per month, therefore can decide properly if I can downgrade my oackage. Is there a site where I can download some software that will tell me ?

  • Id like to know the answer to this aswell , tesco have offered me a free upgrade to 1mb broadband but it has a 3gb restriction not sure if thats enough for me;-)

  • Looking at the BT site, if I downgraded, which they suggested I go from 20GB per month to 6GB, then if/when (?) I go over the 6GB they would put me back to the option I am on now....EXCEPT the option has gone up, so I am sticking with what I have for the sake of a couple of quid, just to be sure.

  • Please someone tell me. Didn't BT use to give you some indication of your usage with a "traffic light" display on your account page to show how much you had used. It would be interesting to hear why BT have dropped that facility - I wonder why?

Interesting. if they can't tell you how much data you use per month, how can they tell if you've exceeded the cap????

HI I have some knoweledge of how BT may monitor your net usage, when they say they can't tell you they can't tell you how much you use basically is untrue. It's basically that the telephone rep person is unable to access the this data from their systems because of the cost of providing this data for every customer is expensive and also it may alert customers to switch pacakages if they know how much they may be using on a monthly basis. It's only if OFCOM tells BT to provide this information. As of yet OFCOM has not enforced this, but hopefully will. There may also be data protection acts that thay may have to adhere to.

BT uses complex systems to monitor your net usage as it is a requirement from OFCOM. They will use a monitoring and usage system via a provider such as tazz networks based in the US.

Yes, but didn't BT once upon a time put this usage information on the "my account" page? I can only imagine that BT are doing this so that the consumer is either left in the dark or, like me, totally confused. Take today as an example, I have a link in my favorites to take me to my btopenworld page. What now happens is that it now redirects me to a BT BB business page - I don't know what is going on but I suspect it is a deliberate ploy to get my money by stealth.
Does anything like this occur with the other major ISPs?

i am no longer on bt anymore ..but when i was on it they DID have that usuage bar you are talking about from the e-mail they sent me when they decided to have usuage bandwith they said that if you go over it they will call you and than discuss what other packages might be better suited for you.. if you get no call that means you havent gone over your usuage.. but for me i couldnt deal with that i hate havin usuage over my head so i switched to another provider..
