  • Dell's customer support is appalling, I know I used to work for them. And when you start every morning with a "todays faults that we are trying to cover up / pass off as features" meeting, it becomes very disheartening.

    I once worked for a local firm who bought a Dell fileserver, and I had no problem talking to the technical people when I had some problems installing a SCSI DAT backup drive (I'd only every installed IDE drives, never SCSI ones).

    My experience with dell support has been excellent, follow up phone calls to make sure everything is ok were a welcome sight, not sure its because i have an XPS as they have premium support or so they say

    Pick me any dell PC and i bet i can find the parts to build the same spec for cheaper!

    I can guarantee you can't. I've built PCs for a living since 1992. I used to sell components online cheaper than Aria and Scan and even I tell people to go to Dell now. Don't forget that you've also got to put Windows on so unless you can build it for £65 less than the Dell price, you're nowhere near. In addition to that, the quality of case you'll end up using will be far inferior to the Dell ones.

    It sounds like your machine had a rough ride from Ireland. I`m not 100% sure but I think you might be able to refuse the machine using the distance selling rules.
    That said manufacturers are entitled to have a go at repairing faulty machines and if it works when you get it back it will still be covered by the guarantee.

    It is, how do they know you didn't fry the board? it will say in the warrenty and if I remember correctly Dell seal the case and on other Manufacturers it states if the case is open the warerenty is void.

    Really, its ok to open a Dell and they don`t seal the case. Mesh are similarly reasonable although there is a seal to discourage fiddling. Other makers may differ.

    My Dell dosent even need screws removed to open-just slide a catch!

    I have to ask the question. Why are you talking about warranties.

    Either reject the PC under the distance selling regulations or under the Sale Of Goods Act as being unfit for purpose.

    If an item is sold to a consumer by someone acting in the course of their business which is not fit for purpose then you are entitled to a refund/replacement. You can choose to accept a repair but I would always advocate rejecting the item because, once you have accepted a repair, this can affect your right to reject the item.

    If you don't want the item repaired reject it and start again.

    Well my good news is that I've finally managed to make contact with someone from the complaints department!!! I was begining to think they didn't have one.
    He is arranging for an engineer to come and fix the laptop free of charge (as it should be) so hopefully my 5 months of hassling dell will come to an end.

    So advice for people with problems with Dell, get email addresses of everyone you speak to and email them weekly. Don't let them forget you. Don't bother trying to phone, you'll just get more annoyed waiting for an answer. And when all else fails say it may be easier to sort this out at small claim court.
    Eventually someone from complaints will contact you :beer:
