How do you clear off unwanted information on the computer. I have a fairly new computer. At the begining it went really fast (on broadband). Now since my OH has been looking at things on it, it has slowed down a lot. How can i clear it all off please!
Thanks

Have you got all the security you need?
Have a look at Internet Security - Free! Viruses! (found on the Techie FAQ's) to check what you have. There is also a lot of useful information in the stickies at the top of the board.
Priority though are 1) Firewall, 2) Antivirus 3) Antispyware/adware (my opinion, have a look at what others say).Torgwen.....................

Just cleaning the hard drive can be done easily by right clicking on the hard drive in My Computer, choosing Properties and then Disk Cleanup (button near the pie-chart).
However, if there are programs on there too you need to go to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and get rid of the ones you don't need. (nb. it is Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs on some versioms of Windows).
Hope that helps!0 -
hehe, wonder what OH has been looking at0

It may be worth also trying http://www.pcpitstop.com/ which scans your computer for problems. It's not mozilla friendy without a plug-in, but works fine with Internet Explorer
Just select 'full PC tune-up', 'New Members', test anonymously if you wish, and it'll give a rather good health-check of your PC0 -

I agree with backflip, this is one of the best pieces of free software out there for the job. No limitations at all and cleans just about every imaginable bit of your pc harddrive (even the bits you didnt know existed).

hi, i've used ccleaner, and it says i have 183 severe problems. I'm not sure how to fix them without it costing. I know i'm being thick. Computers aren't my thing, so thanks for your help.0

Hi again ysoskint,
No problem, thats what the techie board is here for!
I believe you may have installed the wrong program (there soo many out there, most of them cons!), but Ccleaner shouldn't charge you to fix anything, its absolutely free.
To make sure you've got the right program, go to this link >>> here and on the right hand side of this webpage in a green box, it will say "download latest version". Click that link (will be highlighted in blue).
Once you've downloaded it, install it (should only take 30 secs or less to install)
Once installed, open the program and click on the "cleaner" tab on the left hand side (at the top). Then press "run cleaner" on the bottom right hand side.
Once thats done, click on the "issues" tab on the left hand side followed by clicking the "scan for issues" on the bottom middle.
These 2 actions should rid your PC of any junk and clean it up nicely and safely. There's no charge whatsoever for using this program, its completely free (known as freeware).
Hope that helps somewhat more and happy cleaning!0 -
Thank you. I've downloaded it. Then when i opened it, it says:
