Personally I would be pleased that the assistant was so knowledgable - and when you say laughing boy - would you prefer him to be a miserable git?

You are pointing your anger in the wrong direction. Your anger should be pointed towards all the dishonest thieves that went before you ... the people that bought a game in the morning, ripped it off and had it back to the store for a full refund before they closed for lunch (metaphorically speaking). It is for this reason that Game will not allow PC games to be returned.

I also think you are being unfair on the shop assistant. How is he/she meant to know what sort of computer you have .. telling them it is in a black box under the desk with a screen and a keyboard does not help. Nor does it hepl to say it is a Dell, or n IBM etc. The owner of the PC needs to know what they have because nobody else will. Its a bit like walking into Halfords and asking for an oil filter .. they will ask you the make, model and year of the car .. it is not good telling them it is red.

While the policy is unfortunate it is the dishonest that have made it this way .. blame them, not the shop.

My son was given £25 (£20 & £5) of GAME vouchers for his birthday and we happily trotted off to GAME to spend them. The stuff he chose came to £23.98 and he handed over his £25 vouchers. The sales "boy" told me he couldnt give us change, and the lowest denomination of voucher available was £5. So he took the £20 voucher and I had to give him the rest in cash. How crappy is THAT, for the sake of a quid out of his till?
But I think you will find that's what happens with a Smith's voucher, a book token, and probably other vouchers. They don't give change to avoid the situation where people go in, offer a voucher and walk away with change.

I agree that having £5 as the smallest voucher is a bit limiting, but it seems unfair to complain about change not being given on vouchers in GAME when that is quite commonplace.

  • If you really want to be sure of your system specs there is a handy little program.

    The results are fully printable

    https://www.pcworld.com/downloads/ file_description/0,fid,8078,00.asp

Belarc. I believe the latest version is version 7.

Run it and it will report back on all hardware specs...processor, memory, hard drive etc. All software installed and Microsoft patch installation history.

May save a few unwanted purchases...

I fail to see what you are so annoyed about. The shop assistant was being very helpful. Not all new computers have graphics cards. A lot of people assume that because the computer is new then it can run any game. This is not the case and they get very upset when they find they can't play the game on their computer and then they go back to the shop. If you are going to be buying games then you really should know whether it will run on your computer or not. You don't buy a car and not know whether you need to use 4 star or diesel.

The OP has a good point about the "6 months out of date" quote. My 2-year old computer is still more powerful than many new systems and if I'd told the guy in the shop that it was 2 years old I'm sure I'd have been advised that it wouldn't run. Fortunately, I know what I'm doing with PC's, as it's been my job for the past 10 years.

PC games require expensive hardware to run. The cost of a decent graphics card (which a lot of new PC's won't have anyway) is more than the cost of a PS2 console.

It is vital to know the exact specs, even if it is beyond the knowledge of most computer users, who just went to PC-World to buy a PC for web/email/Office stuff. These PC's are probably not up to the task.

The easiest thing to do is to NOT use your PC for games, but rather just use a console for this. Then there are no compatibility issues and you won't be disappointed that it runs slowly.

The guy's only doing his job! More to the point, he's asking you if your PC is compatible to PREVENT you having to take it back! The guy's doing you a favour, and you moan about it?! If you're buying stuff, you should know about it. Would you go into a petrol station and fill up, not knowing if your car was Unleaded or Diesel? EDIT - Just noticed someone else has used the petrol analogy! And it's easy to find out the specs of your computer. Click on the Start button, click "Run", type "dxdiag" and press enter. [/rant]
