If you do the wet foot test:
    http://www.runnersworld.ltd.uk/foottype.htm
that will give you an idea of what type of running shoe you need. There is also a version of this on the New Balance website.
I usually look at the links on the Runners World magazine website, bottom right of this page -'Need some kit?' - http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/ and have had bargains in the past. M and M direct is also worth trying, they have 2 pairs of women's New Balance at the moment, and I think there might be a code for free delivery around somewhere.
ps if you are going to buy New Balance, bear in mind that they do 2 width fittings, most others just have one standard width.

You need to invest in a good pair of running trainers. Me and most of my friends use "New Balance" trainers and i have to say they are the best investment i made for my runs

In my experience I would say Asics as there most popular with runners although I do have a pair of New Balance for "off road" running.

As a cheap alternative I would suggest a pair of "Hi-tec Sliver Shadows" as used by all british army recruits, £10 on ebay or £20 from JJB sports.

Thanks :) That's the prices I was looking for ;)

I can highly recommend the asics brand for running (i was a novice) and they are sometimes reduced in sales etc... at sweaty betty i got mine for £40 instead of £115. Certainly worth going to a sports shop to try or specialist shop for a fitting/guide even if then buying online

I managed to pull a tendon due to running without the proper shoes on so I wouldnt recommend going for a cheap pair really.

I went to Sweat Shop but not sure if they have a branch in Edinburgh. They are really good and make you jog up and down the shop to see how your feet land and recommend the best shoe for you.

I think its also recommended that you get a half size bigger than your normal size as your feet will swell when hot.

    If I don't get a cheap pair then I can't run :p

    Those are my choices...

Thanks for the help. I can't afford proper running shoes, I just want something to go for a run in. I'm not a professional runner so don't really see that I need professional running trainers.
You can't afford to not take the advice on here seriously. Its nothing to do with being a professional runner or not, is to do with long term safety and injuries. You can buy last years cheaper models for around £20 on ebay and online discount sport outlets. If you cant afford them, dont run until you can afford them. I went to this shop http://www.birminghamrunner.com/pages/explained.php
They video you running on a treadmill and analyse your step. They advise on the type of shoe to suit the way you land your feet and then you try examples for fitting. Once you know the type of shoe and fitting you do not have to buy from them. I bought asics off ebay for £30 that were £90 at the shop.
You will find that runners dont normally wear fashion the brands that chavs wear. The brands mentioned on previous posts plus brookes are popular with runners because they are fit for the purpose, and not often worn by chavs. I wear my old runners for dossing around and they are far more durable than 'fashion' nike/addidas expensive rubbish that fall apart.
    Cash ISA rate 6.5% fixed for 2 years. Mortgage rate 0.75% = 5.75% profit on £75K = £4500 per year:j
Mortgages make money. Definitely don't wanabee mortgage free!

When did I say I couldn't afford £20? I do believe I said that that WAS the price I was looking for...

Drea obviously as you can tell your post is attracting all the diehard runners that frequent MSE (I wandered in here thinking somebody might have posted a link to a pair of cheap Asics!)

andrewmoorcroft makes a good point about avoiding "fashion" type trainers, running in these could cripple you although both Nike & Addidas making decent enough running trainers as well (I ran in Nikes for a few years before switching to Asics).

I wouldn't go as far as saying don't bother running if don't have specialized running trainers. The H-itecs I suggested will be fine for when you are starting out, most injures encountered by noob runners simply come from doing too much too soon which would happen irrespective of what trainers your wearing.

Thank you, my problem was I was wearing fashionable trainers, didn't think it'd matter too much to start with but guess it did.

Will have a look for the hi-tech ones :)
