oh dear, i had exactly the same issue. basic loan, no other grants or bursaries, overdraft maxed, etc etc.

ended up working 20hrs a week in a call centre just to make enough money for food etc and ultimatly dropped out cos of the pressure.

best thing to do is try and get a job asap before bills etc start stacking up!

Accommodation = £4442 (includes bills but not food)

Loan = about a grand less than accommodation

    Parental support = not alot.

= Overdraft usage to the max!!

forgive me if this sounds silly, but i thought everyone was entitled to the basic loan of £4600 (approx) - regardless of whether you provide proof of parents income....

my daughter has received (or will ) £4625..... which includes a small amount of grant

i realise that 2nd year accomodation costs are higher than 1st year (assuming you stay on campus), but your figures show you are only getting a loan of £3400!
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

if you live away from home, outside of london, and you are only entitled to the none income assessed part, the most you recieve is £3,470. my rent used to be around £2900 for the full year as i had to live in private halls due to a lack of uni accomodation.

non means assessed: = tuition fee loan £3145 (less if tuition fees are less) + maintenance loan of £3470.

max means tested (from poorest families) = tuition fee loan £3145 (less if tuition fees are less) + maintenance grant of £2835 + maintenance loan of £3365 + university has to give a bursery of at least £315

(all figures are for english students studying outside London away from home.)

Under the new system, don't you get more loan, the less grant you get? So if you get the maximum grant, you'd get the minimum loan, but if you get the maximum loan, then you'd get the minimum or no grant?

not unless they've changed it this yr! the more loan you get, the more grant you tend to get.

I'm pretty sure that the level of loan that you get, reduces, pound for pound, by the level of grant that you get. It's just one of the many, many ways, the system screws over people with middle income households. Not that I'm bitter or anything.;)

Only slightly, if you get the full grant, your loan will be a couple of hundred pounds less than the loan paid to someone on a full grant.

    Here is the calculator:

    http://www.studentfinancedirect.co.uk/portal/page?_pageid=53,1781550&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

You can play around and see what different incomes would give you.

The people who really lose out are those whose parents earn enough that the government assumes they can help their children, whereas in actuality that can't or don't.

My accom is 4400 and that is cheap for the area I live in. The loan is quite a bit less than that so I'm pretty screwed!!
