Skype

Have received a message "from" SKYPE this morning, headed "share.skype.com upgrade and your Skype password change" - does anyone know if this is kosher? Am really wary about just complying with their request in case it is a hoax.

Not very good at this kind of thing .......

  • That heading sounds rather phishy by itself; why would anyone besides yourself request that you change your password?

Skype havejust upgraded there systems (share.skype users), as I went through the same process myself after I logged in to skype and it told me that my password was invalid.(the email link takes to you a secure skype page)

Log in to skype.com and request a new password, after a few minutes you'll get an explanation email about the password and then a few minutes later a new password email.

Log back in online and change the password, once you've done this you'll be back to where you started.

The reason I logged in to skype was beacuse it told me I had password problems, it was only after I requested the password that I got the email, thats how I know its legit.

  • Exactly - that is why I was suspicious - this is the e-mail I received, but with the links removed for safety sake.

Let me know what you think please - anyone.

    Dear share.skype.com user,

We are upgrading share.skype.com so that the system used to sign in to the site is better integrated with the main Skype.com user sign-in system. You used your Skype Name and password to sign in to (Removed for safety)previously to participate in discussions and use personalized content, and you will continue to do so.

Because of changes in the secure password storage system, we would like all (Removed for safety) users to update their Skype password to ensure their continued privacy.

During the next 24 hours, we will be resetting the passwords of all affected Skype Names. In order to sign in to Skype the first time after this reset, you should simply follow the procedures for recovering a lost password. Just go here and follow the instructions:
    (Removed for safety)

Remember that Skype will never contact you to ask for your password.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?

Just go here to get your new Skype password:
    (Removed for safety)

If you have trouble getting it from there, please submit a Customer Service ticket at this address:
    (Removed for safety)

Alternatively, you can e-mail to (Removed for safety), to reset your password.

HOW DO I KNOW THIS E-MAIL IS NOT FAKE?

We have recently seen a lot of Skype-related faked e-mail. You should always be careful about such e-mails. Remember, Skype will never contact you to ask for your password. To show you that this e-mail is valid and from Skype, a copy of this mail is posted at the following
    address:
    (Removed for safety)

Skype. The whole world can talk for free.

DON'T WANT TO HEAR FROM US AGAIN?

We don't want to send emails you don't want to receive, so please remember that you can just send an empty e-mail to the following address and we will never bother you again:
    (Removed for safety)

I must admit it was a suspicious email but as I knew what it was I was okay.

Try logging in to your skype and try to amke a call, does it tell you your password is invalid ?. Have you used share.skype ?.

How did you get the email ?

I tried to make a phonecall in skype and got told my password was invalid. I logged in to skype.com and requested a new password, it was only then that I got the email, otherwise I would have been very suspicious.

  • I have just one contact at the present time who uses Skype and I did a test call to her - it did ring, but I did not continue with the call due to the time difference. I did not get any message stating I needed to update or change my password.

I just got an ordinary e-mail from Skype, and I am not really sure what share.skype is.

It may then be that someone has started a scam with a similar email.

Try logging out of skype and back in and see if you have the password problem.

If you do, go to skype.com directly to request a new password rather than through an email link, at least then you know you've gone to the correct page.

  • well share.skype is a subdomain of skype.

if you type it yourself you should have no problem, as only skype themselves have control over what subdomains they have..

That was one of the reasons that I was inclined to trust it, although like I say I did log directly in to skype.

If it is legit, its bad form to just send an unsolicited email with a dodgy title that asks you to follow a password change link and then in the email, warn you about spoof emails.

  • So if I use Skype but not share.skype, why would I need to be contacted in the first place?

According to the email, no, but if its a scam one that you received they'll hav ecopie dthe original email.

Unless you have had password problems , just ignore it and delete it.
