spyware/redirection problem

Hi all,

Hiope I'm in the right place! I've come across a problem with our pc/net the last week or so now. Whenver I used to log into my bank's website (Nationwide by the way) it asked for 3 of my 6 digits from my passcode.

However on Sunday it was asking for all 6 and me being stupid put in all 6. I then realised what I'd done and got in touch with Nationwide who have since reset my passcode and provided me with a new one.

It would appear that somehow, something/someone has got onto the Nationwide website and when I clicked "sign on" it was going to a different site/place rather than the genuine Nationwide sign in page.

I'm currently using windows xp home edition and IE7. I have the free version of AVG for my anti-virus and Ad-aware for the spyware etc. Since Sunday I have downloaded "Spybot search & destroy" and whenever I've ran this and then restarted my pc I've been able to log into my bank account without a hitch.

As I've had this everytime I've logged on during the last week, I would like to know how I would go about solving this problem in the longrun as a) I don't want and b) shouldn't have to run Spybot everytime I log on.

Is there something which I can use/download online for free to hopefully prevent this happening whilst it's running in the background? I've been told it's a redicrection/spyware problem.

I think you need to run Hijack this and the copy and paste the log here so that the Techie peeps can go through it and point out anything that may need removing

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

• Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
• Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
• When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
• When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
• Then click Finish.
• MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
• On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
• If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
• The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
• When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
• Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
• Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
• The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
• Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Instructions for a Hijack Log

Click here to download HijackThis.
Save HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
Double click on the HJTInstall.exe icon to start the program.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
After the final dialogue box it will launch HijackThis.

Click on the scan button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Save the log, and post me it in your next reply.

was just posting a reply before id seen your reply, may or may not be the same thing which you'd highlighed....

just tried logging onto nationwide again and the same thing happens so im currently running spybot, so far its found this...

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually; I
• nstead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
• Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new hijack log.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
