Hi, I live in a large 3 bedroomed semi house ll on my own, looking at ways to cut my heating bills down this winter. My sister suggested use of halogen heater which she reckons is about 5p per hour to run?? This will enable me to be warm but not necesarily the rest of the house which is pointless.
Anybody know if this is true? Any views on this or alternative methods?:A
Thank you in advance!

For continuous heating they are no more effective, efficient or less costly than other electrical heaters. However, for quick bursts of localised heat, they are particularly good as they direct the heat and start almost instantly. Of course, you also get a lighting effect which may not suit everyone.
Running cost depends on the wattage of the bulbs, but some have 3 settings, each rated at 350 watt. If your normal electricity is costing you 12p per kwh (1000 watts for 1 hour), then each setting will cost 4.2p for 1 hour.
If you have mains gas, it will be the lowest cost to heat the house. If you only want to heat 1 room, then the halogen heater may be ok, but could need to be on the full 3 settings at 12p per hour to warm an average sized room.0 -
The main advantage of halogen heater is when used ,say, sitting at a bench in an unheated garage or workshop as they direct heat in a beam rather like a torch beam directs light.
As stated above, using Gas CH with the rest of the house radiators off is the best method of heating a room.0 -
Hi, Thanks for that info, I suppose turning off rest of the heaters is a better idea I had not thought about!

I'd agree with the lighting comment, they are pretty bright!0
