Should I switch from Click 5 to Click 6 or Capped till 2012?

Options
I'm currently with British Gas on Click 5 dual fuel. I noticed that they recently released Click 6 and also a capped tariff till 2012.

Should I move to Click 6 or get a capped one till 2012?

That is like asking who will win the 2:30 at Epsom in 2009!!

The have been literally hundreds of posts on the merits/demerits of fixing.

Certainly the premium you pay on the already very high BG standard tariff makes it seem unattractive.

The gamble is will you recoup the extra you are paying now before 2012?

Nobody, but nobody, knows the answer to that question although lots of strong opinions are expressed.

Personally I wouldn't go for the fixed 2012 tariff now but switch to Click 6 . There is normally some sort of notice/indication that BG are going to withdraw the 2012 offer(next year?) and the time to make a decision is then.
  • A week ago I applied online to swap to Click 5. Having found out on MSE that BG had not yet increased their prices on 30/09/08 for Click 5 I have cancelled the application today - I am currently with ScotPower

As a low user Click 6 seems pretty similar - no tie-ins or cancellation fees allowing me to be flexible and 'jump ship' cheaply.

I am unwilling to gamble on a long term contract for capping as my monthly DD duel fuel bill is only about £50.00 - cancellation fees for BG2012 are £35.00 per service i.e. £70 - more than 10% of my annual fuel costs.

And I am always suspicious that they will charge up to the cap or delay reductions if prices fall - and they have done in the past although the trend is rising.

3 years is a long time, would you sign up to any other service for that amount of time? Plus you are being pressured to make the swap before January 2009, their info states -

"We will honour the Fixed Price 2012 rates unless we are prevented from doing so by the action or anticipated action of any governmental or statutory body. No direct debit discount will be applicable to the Fixed Price 2012 tariff. We may withdraw this offer at any time."

A get out clause................... if ever there was one

That 'get out' clause is standard. If the Government alters VAT rates for fuel, bans fixed/capped rate deals etc(e.g. insists all companies offer a single uncomplicated tariff.) All highly unlikely!

More than a million BG customers signed in 2005 for a fixed price deal that ran for four and a half years(not 3 years) to April 30 2010; and they are all very happy they did so. My annual bill is approx £600 less than Click 6 rates, and still has over 18 months to run.

    Should I move to Click 6 ...?

I'm alittle confused now... I understand Click Energy 6 to be more expensive than Click Energy 5... so why would you even consider that an option? Unless I have misunderstood it.

My question (which is why I came onto this board)...

I signed upto Click Energy 5 in August after BG removed the 2009 cap option.

I understand they have just released Click Energy 6... does that mean it's just another tariff... or have they increased the price of Click 5 and renamed it? (and automatically migrated me to this new tarriff).

I know it would sound a bit stupid to rename it just because of price rise but I wanted to make sure as I can't find confirmation of my tariff on my online account.

Or does it mean that Click % is no longer available to customers wshing to switch. If you'r already on it before Click 6 was introduced then your fortunate to stay on it..... i.e there are potentially customers out there still on Click Energy 1
    very confused:confused:

They have massively increased the price of Click 5.

They have introduced Click 6 which is cheaper than the new Click 5 prices.

They will not switch you automatically to Click 6 from Click 5. You have to apply - takes seconds.

Nobody should stay on Click 5 unless they intend to switch fro BG to another company - you will remain on old Click 5 rates if you notify them you are switching.

    Thanks for that.

It's sounds a bit of an absurd pricing structure. If both the T&Cs of Click 5 and 6 are the same, Why not just alter the price of Click 5 to whatever Click 6 is now.

So let me get this right...
Current Click 5 is more expensive than Click 6... but Click 6 is more expensive than the old Click 5... so basically Click 6 sits somewhere between the old and new Click 5 prices???

I may just do the switch now.... anybody know what is the best site to switch from to gain maximum cashback... (I'm a member of Quidco)

I am still on Click Energy One !! - or just Click Energy as it was called when I switched from EDF 2 years ago.

I'm amazed to find out that there have been 6 variations of this tariff in just 2 years.

This seems to suggest that they just keep changing the name to provide a temporary "low" tariff to attract switchers, then hike the prices up for existing customers.

To me this verges on criminal deception.

Unfortunately when I switched (both gas and elec), they forgot to take any DD payments for the gas for a year - consequently through no fault of mine I now have a large debit balance, so am scared to switch as I would have to pay it back in one go.

Would that still apply if I changed to Click Energy 6? (if they allow existing customers to switch).

Do all these companies have large departments constantly thinking up new ways to screw the customer ???

Just done a dual fuel price comparison and BG click 6 has come up as the cheapest option.

I'm confused as I'd heard of click 5and waited until it had increased its prices before doing my price comparison. I do my price comparison and click 5 does not come up at all, but click 6, and I'd never heard of it. So my questions are... has BG click 6 upped its prices recently like all the other suppliers, there's an increase yet to come or its so new the price is just the price, if you see what I mean.....
