Yes they do work on pressure mine is always loosing it and sometimes have to turn tap on just under the boiler to get it back up.

I just applied for a grant last week and having them come around tommorow night to inspect the boiler and check that we have the incomes we say we have.

Its getting more urgent to get boiler fixed now, not only as it a real pain to get hot water, and can no longer have baths despite my eldest not able stand to long under a shower because of her condition but the rads now often go out because the pilot light is constantly going out.

They told me on the phone I have to wait 6 months but they must fo taken pity on is as its now an emergency.

Although I thought you HAD to have a combi boiler these days? Or is it something else special about new boilers these days? I know they're supposed to be greener these days!

I think what you have to have now is a condensing boiler, & yes it's supposed to be greener.

Combi, condensing, they both begin with C

Poppycat, can you get a plastic stool in the shower for your daughter to sit on?

Had Warmfront round tonight they got it down as a repair although my brother in law who is a plumber told us last year that it was on its way out.

I hadnt thought of a plastic stool we are just mangering to get enough water from boiler although its a real pain due to pilot light going out every 20-30 secs on so. Its made worse that our bath is huge.

Poppycat, we have this bath board over our bath. It really helps my OH who cannot stand under a shower.

combi boiler usually on the wall. a condensing boiler which looks more like what you probably think of as a conventional floor standing boiler. new regulations mean you have to have condensing boiler now from april 2005 i think. problem with this is that there is some moisture so you often need a pipe leading from boiler to outside. a pain in the bum if your boiler is not on an outside wall. When a combi boiler goes wrong then it REALLY goes wrong (i.e. expensive to fix). The plumbers i know steer well clear of combis if possible because they can be fraught with problems

Zziggi - granddaughter, daughter, sister & SIL to plumbers - at least i never have to worry about a dodgy boiler or leaky pipe :D

If a boiler needs changing or replacing then from April 2005 it has to be the condensing type.

We considered changing our boiler, thought we could have another one in the fireplace like the present one, but a condensing one can't go in the fireplace.

Have put the idea on the back burner - this boiler is 13 years old but so far it's not causing problems.

Modern boilers are much 'greener'. The difference is (I think) that water is only heated as required, it doesn't have a separate tank which is kept hot whether used or not. We are a pair of wrinklies and once we've both had our shower in the morning, and washing-machine on perhaps twice a week, the tank is kept hot for the rest of the time and isn't needed. So you can see that this is very wasteful of energy.

For someone who can't stand under a shower, it's possible to get a special chair or seat to sit under the shower. Maybe worth considering?
