they will charge you for the unlock code - not sure how much though
better getting it done at a phone stall at a market for about £100 -
I wanted to leave Virgin Mobile and go to O2 a few months ago - The phone was a Nokia 7250i, and I tried the online one's and all failed. SO called Virgin, they said if I had spent more than £25 (IIRC) they would unlock it for free.
Code arrived after 30 days and worked fine. I'm now a proud O2 customer.
Hope that helps you out mate!!

Pop down to your local market and there is sure to be a 'friendly chav' there who can do it for you.
We have one in Leeds and I got mine done for £7.00 in about 10 mins

Iain you can't ask o2 to unlock your virgin phone - you would need the ask the network who locked it ( Virgin in this example ), a repair centre or small independant shop or the market traders to unlock it. As previously mentioned Virgin will unlock it free as long as you have spent £30 on topping up your sim card ! Otherwise expect to pay around £10
