Quitting Smoking?!!! Grrr!!!

  • I really want to give up smoking... sort of.

I've been smoking now since I was 15 (I'm 23 now) and for finance, health and my mother's sake I really need to give up.

I tried to give up once before and it worked for 36 hours (this is a revalation btw as I've never gone more than a day without a cigarette, even when I had pneumonia). But it was the day my mum died.... from smoking and I remember scrunching up my cigarettes, throwing them in the bin and then walking back and shouting at the bin (completely understandable). However the next day, with everything going on, my family going on I caved.

Now, looking at the demotivator, begging credit for cigarettes from my shop when I haven't even got a loaf of bread to eat (Yes! I'm that bad!) I really need to pull my act together. I may be 23 now but it's better to knock it on the head now than in ten years time down the line.

Ironically, hardly any of my friends smoke, none of my family smoke and only one of my flatmates smokes.

I've never really tried to give up before but I am willing to give it a go. I'm kind of scared though because as many reasons as there are to give up I can't help but enjoy smoking. As I've never REALLY tried before (the previous example, I blame stress as a contributing factor) how should I go about giving up? I know everybody says just look at my mother and how she ended up (in a wheelchair, on oxygen, in and out of ICU for two years, reduced to a shell of herself) but I selfishly (and stupidly) can't seem to get the courage up to do it.

Ahem, essay over. Any advice would be brilliant.

It's much easier to give up chocolate than give up cigarettes!!

And besides, smokers are reliant on one vice only, whereas fat people just eat too much. Eating is a normal thing required for staying alive, whereas smoking isn't.

Smoking is an addiction, whereas I would argue that eating too much is perhaps greed???

    What a load of rubbish.
I have been both a smoker and overweight, and believe me it was a lot easier to give up the cigarettes than it was to diet.

Four years on and the smell of smoke does nothing for me, but the smell from the Bakery, the chippie or an open box of choccies makes my heart beat overtime, and I realise I will have to have the willpower to resist overeating for the rest of my life. :EasterBun

Yes, I have no addiction to chocolate any more. I do still eat it occasionally, but only if it's really worth it i.e. Green & Blacks white chocolate, or a toblerone!! If I'm gonna shovel lardy stuff into my body, I may as well go for quality lard! I no longer have my 2+ bar a day addiction.

Not sure Mr Pinkshoes would appreciate the trade. And I should warn you, I'm VERY untidy and tend to leave a trail of mess behind me... :D Becoming tidy is SO much harder than giving up smoking!! I just can't do it! D'y think I can get help on the NHS??

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
