uni library - fines

  • I don't pay library fines at all. I'm under the care of the "Disability and Wellbeing Office," which takes care of students with physical, mental or learning disabilities. As a result I have an "individual student agreement" which enables me to access certain facilities, sit my exams in isolation and not pay library fines. If you have a learning disability or other "special needs," I would advise asking the relevant welfare advisors at your university whether you can have allowances like this made for you (or more time to give the books back, &c.)

I don't mean this as a personal attack on you, so please don't take it as such.

Personally, I think that is completely unfair. Not only getting longer with the book but also not paying fines! I would love to have more than four hours with a book, the speed at which I read and digest knowledge isn't great. I don't have a learning disability, I just like to take my time to fully understand what the author is saying. That four hours might, just might, get me a chapter as long as it's not too long. If I don't take the book back in time I'll get charged 50p for ever hour.

Again, not having a go but yes, a tad unfair.

When I was doing my degree, as a mature student - I'd take a book out [after work hours of course], drive 45 mins home, work all evening reading, digesting etc, get up at 6 next day, drive there and back in order to return the book and get to work on time.

As I got no handouts, or fee reduction and was living off Netto noodles, I couldn't afford the fines as I'd have had the whole day's fines to pay.

I agree - as well not meant as a personal attack or any such way against the disability, but i do not see why some students should not have to pay fines? Surely that means you can just keep the book for aslong as you feel like?

Also if you don't pay the fine, the uni won't allow you do graduate or recieve certificate for course.

What?!!! Surely they cant do that?

I agree fines should be paid but surely they are not able to stop you graduating because of an outstanding library fine!

That's what I was thinking, Flower. That when it comes essay time and everyone is wanting a copy of a book (even worse if there is only one copy!) then not having to pay fines would mean they would take longer bringing it back.

I'm sure there are restriction, or at least I hope so. I'd be interested to hear how this works from Euphemia. Especially with regards to keeping books longer than everyone else (exactly how much longer, for example) and book recalls.

Yep, It's classed as a debt to the university. Even something like 5p will stop you graduating.

There was a story in the papers not long ago about a woman who went to her graduation, got her "degree", opened it and found a library fine!

Tis true - anyone with outstanding fines is sent a letter towards the end of year with deadlines, or they miss that graduation and graduate after the fine is cleared.

Unlike the others, maybe I'm not so kind or PC, I will put this personally and think that if you are abusing the system and or reccomending others to do so at the detriment to the majority then you're bang out of order. I've got several friends with dyslexia and somehow they magically managed to return books on time 90% of the time - pretty much the same (if not better than some) as my other friends.

We're all getting too used to making excuses for people and it has to stop sooner or later - then newest one that trouble making chavs have a chemical imbalance is I think the straw that breaks the camels back.

I do hope this only applies if no other student has recalled the book?

I'm all for not discriminating but students should not be allowed to 'withold' (because that's what it could amount to) a popular book from every other student in their group just because they have a disability! If I thought that was happening, I'd be kicking up a stink, that's for sure!

I'd have thought it would be fairer to allow a slightly longer loan period but keep the fines, personally.
