uni library - fines

I don't know if this is common across all uni library but here are our loan periods and fines. I think they are very expensive for a uni library fine. I want to know other peoples opinions and what other people pay.

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students are permitted to borrow an overall maximum of 23 items from the library made up of:
  • A maximum of 2 RBR books (24 hour loan)
  • A maximum of 2 short loan items (3 hour loan)
  • A maximum of 6 popular loans (1 week loans)
Undergraduate 4th year Honours Students

Undergraduate 4th year honours students are permitted to borrow an overall maximum of 25 items from the library made up of:
  • A maximum of 2 RBR books (24 hour loan)
  • A maximum of 2 short loan items (3 hour loans)
  • A maximum of 6 popular loans (1 week loans)
the fines are if you do not get them back on time -

50p per day or part of dayLong loan5p per day or part of day

Users will be blocked from borrowing when they reached £10 in total for any item or items overdue.

Well I had 2 RRB books out and I renewed them, but I didn't notice but someone wanted both of them yesterday at 12 noon so I have been landed with a £15 fine as I have just got them both back now.

expensive?
what do you have to pay?

I think the fines at my uni library are about the same and they have caught me out a few times. But to be honest in my opinion its the only fair way to do it, otherwise people would just keep the books at home if they knew they weren't going to have any fines and other students wouldnt have any access to them. Annoying yes - but if we hand books in on time there shouldnt be a problem!

Those fines are pretty much the same as the two universities I've been at.
  • Ditto. You just need to be careful and check your uni emails regularly. I was once hit with a £6.50 fine out of the RBR accidently, but believe me it is far worse when you have an essay due, recall a book and someone decides to just pay the fine and keep it. I've recalled them a fortnight before essays are due and still not got them in time. Personally, I would be more bothered about the fact that the uni are spending millions on empty space next year and we have no library.

I haven't checked in a while but I believe it is 20p per day for normal loans and 50p per day if they have been recalled by another student. It is quite hefty for the hourly rate loans here too but I can't remember the actual figure.

They have made it much easier to remember when they are due now though as we just have the short loans (4 hours) and normal loans (2 weeks). Plus, if another student requests a book that is out, they will not recall it before the original student has had it at least two weeks.

Means we wait longer for recalled books but, equally, we don't have to return a book earlier than it's due date, and we do know when they should be back in. Before we had to recall them and just keep checking iyswim.

Personally *prepares to be shot down in flames* I would set the fine for recalled books at £1 a day, or more, as many students will hold onto them and pay the fine because it is still cheaper than buying the book!

Btw, that is an awful lot of books you can take out! If students here took 24 books out, the library would be empty!! :rotfl: Ours has increased slightly this year (not sure how much as I am part time) but last year it was 12 book in total, or 15 for final year students.
  • Some uni libraries will email you when your books are due to be renewed - so check your uni email account regularly and renew online! Set yourself a reminder to renew on a certain date each week for example.

OR make friends with one of the lovely library staff who can wipe all of your fines for you!!! I used to work in HE / FE libraries. ;)

Our unis the same. Its less for the 2 week loan though, think its like 30p a day instead of the 50p. But for 24 hours its 50p per hour.

Also if you don't pay the fine, the uni won't allow you do graduate or recieve certificate for course.

I think at my university if you have a four hour or twenty four hour then it goes up 50p per hour its overdue, and 5p a day for the week long loans as well as the month long ones. Unless those have been recalled and it's 20p a day or something.

I've never had a fine so I'm not completely sure, but I think that's correct. My university will e-mail a week in advance of a book being due back (three days if it's a week long loan) and twenty four hour and four hours don't get reminders. They will also e-mail you if the book has been recalled and will usually (depending on how many people want the book) will give you five days to return it, they will also send a letter out to you so you've not really got an excuse not to return it.

One your fine reaches a certain amount, no idea what it is but I don't think it's much, then you will be barred from borrowing books. Doesn't stop you reading the books in the library though.
