Oven cleaning tips required please!!

While I was away last week, OH decided to try out his culinery skills....

We've got an electric fan assisted oven/grill & he decided to grill some burgers - but the fat has splattered everywhere, including the element thingy

After many attempts with the Mr Muscle (although I've not used this on the element), the oven is still "smoking" really badly each time I put it on - any ideas?!!

Thanks in advance

It would probably depend on your oven, and the type of liners etc. I now have a pyrolitic oven, which has a special setting and is absolutely brilliant and easy to clean.

The ovens with the catalytic-type liners (sometimes look like a dull, matt finish) do sometimes come with instructions to clean by running the oven at highest temperature for a while. It might be worth a try to burn off any grease etc.?

The easiest way to clean the element is to put the heat up high and burn it off.

It will smoke for a while but then you should have no trouble.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Turn up the heat for the elements, also try Oven Pride for the removable shelves.
  • Didn't think of doing that!! I've been turning the oven off each time it's started to smoke so we've been trying to get by with just the hob & microwave!!

Will give that a go later - thanks for all of your help.

Another vote for Oven Pride for the shelves.

Yes try turning on elements to burn off
But perhaps turn off smoke alarm and open windows .

And before the 'teach your granny brigade post'
remember to turn on smoke alarm afterwards :j

for deep burnt on black spots on enamel panels soak in neat cillit bang then gently scrap off using a decorators one sided razor blade window scraper, or a scourer if not too heavy. (the eco way is to use bicarb and white vinegar mixed)
  • Try washing soda - about 60p a bag - sometimes in the laundry section of the supermarket rather than the cleaning section. A thick layer on the bottom of the oven with a damp teatowel over it, a paste on the element, etc - keep it damp for as long as you can. Go away for a long time and do something more interesting. Vacuum it out (empty the Vac immediately) and then give it a very good rinse. You might want to finish off by putting an oven tray full of water and lemon juice/vinegar in and putting the oven on full whack. When it gets cool enough, wipe it over. Old towels that you can throw away afterwards help but at least this approach doesn't take your skin off, burn your eyes and burn your wallet (I've bought £double digit cleaners in Lakeland that don't work as a well as this). If all else fails and it is really burnt on carbon, get on of those things that scrapes paint off windows and be incredibly gentle with it! Then repeat all the above.

The whole layer of washing soda and then going off and forgetting about it for a few days approach also works very well for pans you thought were burnt beyond repair! Can you tell I burn lots of thing?

take the shelves out the oven and put in a pan of boiling water & close the door. the steam should soften all the gunk and then just wipe it with a cloth.
  • I moved into a flat with a 20 year old oven (creda Cordialle) worked but had NEVER been cleaned - it was Gross - and the smoke ! I tried all the usual - but OvenPride (took 2 goes) has returned it to what I can honestly describe as new - not a mark! I wiped it over the indside (very generously) in a 'kill or cure' king of way - and did the shelves in the bag - put the rest on the bottom! Whatever is in it its good ! So much I was very careful about wiping out on the basis that it must be strong. As fo rthe grill element - I had it on full for half an hour - burnt off the grease (left 'ash' on the oven bottom)

    Gets my vote
  • We have a pyrolytic self clean oven and just push a button and it goes to 500deg. turns everything to ash, sweet.
