Next Website Scam

High street clothing retailer Next have a website (http://www.next.co.uk/) where they offer most of their product lines for online sale and delivery...

...or they appear to! Try to order anything at all from this site and instead of taking payment the site automatically signs you up for a Next credit card!

Surely this cannot be legal?! How does such a well known company get away with behaviour like this?

Does anyone have any recommendations for where I can complain and get this practice stopped permanently?

As detailed on another thread on here. It doesn't automatically sign you up for a Next Directory account.

When going through the checkout it gives you the choice.

It is in the terms and conditions but far too easy to accidentally apply for one.

All I can remember of my one and only experience with Next (a bad one) is that I applied to get a free directory to get some points from mutualpoints or somewhere alike.
Nowhere did it say I was going to get more of them... and have to pay for them.
So I gave them an earful and they stopped... !

Maybe that was once the case, but my experience yesterday was that even if you uncheck the directory option it doesn't help. The site has no alternate payment mechanism, AFAICS.

In particular this post from the previous thread is not correct.

Just been on to do a dummy purchase, no mention that I could see of having to use an account, payment screen gave me option to choose card type etc.

Do you mean the type of card you want to pay with, or the type of card you want them to give you?
