Howling/crying Doggy!

Unfortunately on saturday or monday, depending on how she is, i am having to take my 17 year old much loved doggy to the vet and she will not be coming home. My problem is my other dog, 3years old, when old doggy is not there he cries/howls ALL night and we will assume all day, although he has never been on his own during the day so i don't know for sure. So apart from dreading the old dog going........ i am also dreading the other dog making all that noise!

Does anyone have any ideas to stop this as ( to make it money saving!) we cannot afford anything like a dog pshycologist!!!!

So farthe only thing i can think of is that he is allowed sleep on the bed with me but as he already tries to rule the roost i really don't want to do this plus OH works nights so ia asleep during day and will defo not want dog on bed with him!
:D I know i'm in my own world~it's ok they know me here!!! :D

  • So sorry to hear about your old dog, its such a sad time.

I only have one idea and itmay well not be a good idea for you, but... how about adopting an older rescue dog? I know it may not be the right answer or the right time for you, but I dont know the answer.

When I was a kid we had a golden retriever, Bob, and a jack russell, Biff. When Bob died, Biff pined for ages and there didnt seem to be much we could do to cheer him up. I guess they miss their pals just as much as we do.

However, Biff was much older and they had been together all their lives, so I guess he wasnt as able to change as a younger dog might be.

    How terribly sad :-(

I don't know how true it is, but I've heard that if you can let the current dog(s) see the older dog afterwards, they cope with it much better. Is there any possibility of you having the vet come to your home instead? Obviously it would cost more though. Or maybe you could take both dogs with you on the day?

Perhaps you could speak to your vet about it first and see what they suggest?
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
  • Can't you 'recruit' a replacement dog for the job??

Draw up a list of applicants and invite them for an assesment.Lol Lol:beer:

Seriously it sounds like your dog will need f/time company of another.

Get it a job with the OH on nite's Lol Lol

It might be worth getting a DAP diffuser and having it on now in the run up to the parting. It's supposed to calm dogs and whilst it wont stop your dog feeling upset or confused it might calm him a little and help to lessen his anxiety?

I'm sorry your old friend will be going, it's a sad time and my thoughts are with you.
  • thanks for the replies

I'd second the idea of taking the younger dog with you or have the old dog pts at home....I've always let my dogs see the body and they seem to accept that their companion is gone.

Also, it's really difficult but try to stick to a routine and if possible not let the remaining dog pick up on how upset you are, IMO that upsets them too.

    Sorry about your dog.
  • I'd take the younger dog with you. Can't see any reason why you shouldn't.

A friend of mine did this the hard way - took old dog home on the bus (in a deceased condition as it were) to show to her other dog and then took old dog back to the vet's - on the bus again - to be cremated.

Horrible situation to be in but hope you get through it all right.

Our hound hates being left on his own too, and after we had his brother put down was constantly crying and barking if we even left him in a room on his own to get something from elsewhere in the house.

If getting a replacement dog isnt feasible for you can you keep the remaining dog in one or two rooms (we fitted a bolt to the kitchen door leaving him with the kitchen and conservatory to wander about in) and leave a radio on while you want to leave it alone?
The noise from the radio seems to soothe ours in to not feeling alone and our neighbours havent complained about him being noisy since, although he still hates us wandering out of the room he's in without making sure he knows we're going!
It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

  • we are still talking about taking him to the vets to see her when she s gone, i think OH will have to take him back in i don't think i can bear it! I like the idea of the radio never thought of that .... am not really bothered what the neighbours think one side has 4 dogs who just love to bark and howl ALL at the same time:mad: and at the other side one dog who, as soon as neighbour has left the house just loves to howl and howl!! My concern is OH not sleeping!

Am feeling very sick at mo its getting nearer and i don't want to do it but i know i have to she just doesn't have the same quality of life any more. OThe only good thing i can see is that i will so bust sorting little dog out i will not have time to dwell after she has gone.
