  • .....driving without MOT....

Can you escape the rust thing?  The way the garage put it - no, you can't, that's it, after a time a perfectly great car in all other respects just can't go on.  <sob>

You can drive home from a failed MOT, and also to a pre-arranged test/repair.
Don't necessarily take the garages word about the rust, my car's rusty, but it's only a fail point if it's structural.

Bedford Street Garage, Bedford Street, Halifax do only MOTs. IIRC there's a limit on the size/type of vehicle due to their emissions unit. Their last charge (end of April) was £30. If in doubt I usually ask in advance about fees and retesting. Often it's 30 days without a further fee whether the 'rules' say so or not.

My tip is to find local car repair places who *don't* do MOTs and ask them where they normally take their repaired vehicles for MOTs. That's where I got the above recommendation when I had a sills job done at a repairs-only place.

The second tip is ask for repairs-only place tips, from the MOT-only places.

I've searched in vain for a centre local to me here in Granrham, Lincolnshire. I had to get my car tested at a local garage but thankfully it passed! Fom Martin's list there doesn't appear to be anything in Lincolnshire at all. Does anyone know of one? If so I'll be ready for next year!

I have my car tested at Runabout Autocentres in Rugby on Sommers Road Industrial Estate. I have had it done there for the last 3 or 4 years at a cost of £19 ;D :o. They also give you 14 days to have the work done (which doesnt have to be done there) and a free re-test within those 14 days if necessary. They wil charge after 14 days mind.

Just got my car back from Birmingham City Council.

Cost me £47.00 but no re-test fee.

It failed first time on a dodgy track-rod end. Bought one for £12.50 locally and got a local garage to fit it for £30.

The MOT tester was very fair and gave me advice to ensure the "borderline" issues were corrected for next year!

I will certainly visit them again!
