Plumber or not, can't do it - it looks too complicated.

Has anyone done a Varde sink unit from ikea??

this is my new sink unit from ikea. I have built it myself as I did all the other ikea units. I am scared of plumbing it in.

I had a plumber and he only charged £90 to put on two radiators. I have the tap and everything with the unit, but just not confident enough to connect after turning water off.

The old sink is still up as below and it shows the old connections. I can't remove this until I know what to do or get my plumber to do it.

you will probably need 2 reducers. from your existing 15mm to the new 10mm connectors.
as for the waste, it should just all fit together with a bit of cutting pipes. you may just need a new straight connector.
any half decent plumbers merchants will advise you on what you require.
    Get some gorm.
  • What are reducers - what do you mean 15 mm to 10mm - the taps??
I have not a clue about sink plumbing. Really going to a plumbers merchants I would end up being advised wrongly cause they can not see what I am doing.

All I need to get done is the hole cut in the sink for new tap, the hole cut in the back of the unit for the plastic pipe and to connect it to the old waste that starts in the wall.

I really have no idea what to do. I am good with radiator connections but not sinks.

  • Print the photos out and take them along to the plumbers merchants - you will be surprised how helpful they can be!

yes. your present pipes are 15mm (the usual size for most domestic pipework).
some modern taps use 10mm fittings. so you need reducers.
if theres no tap hole in the sink (very rare) then the tap instructions should show you the size of hole required to be drilled.
the rest will be fairly easy once you start.

    example:

  • Hi

I hope you can run the waste out of the wall with a fall as it looks like the existing waste is running uphill.
Ikea will sell you a hole punch for the tap hole. Otherwise you will need a good quality hole saw to drill it out.
I fitted an Ikea waste some years ago and promised myself to never even open the packaging on one again. IMO they are rubbish.
You might be better to let a plumber at it.

taps are 15mm as is your pipework

you will need a 1 1/2 mcalpine straight to connect the waste or bin the lot and get a 1.5 bowl kit with new strainers

I cannot believe you have to drill your own tap holes if you buy a sink from Ikea!! What a waste of time unless you have the right kit it all goes wrong!

Yes I know, I have a sink cutter that you have to buy from ikea separate. to be honest the units are good but they expect you to do everything and the unit was £300 ! I wish I had not chosen this kitchen.

  • I will ring my plumber - I have not the strength to deal with these things, lately after working so much on my house non-stop I have to take my time with things as my energy has been sapped and I do not feel very healthy.

I agree Ikea wastes are rubbish, I always buy normal wastes and fit them myself.
