Hello All,
I have just bought myself a brand spanking new Sony Vaio VGN-FW11E laptop and seem to be having some problems getting everything to work properly. If anyone can give me some tips on what I should do with my new purchase with regards to setting up security etc then that would be great. On my previous laptop I was running Virgin medias PCGuard which seemed to work ok, never realy had any problems with it. But now I try and put the disk in to put it on to my new laptop and it keeps on coming up with an error.
"WFDE+Utilityprograms+workflowharnessEXE has stopped working"
Realy not sure what it means so I tried to download it from the internet and it keeps telling me that I need to connect to the internet? Seems a bit strange as Im on the blooming internet to download it?
Now I realy dont want to set up the free 60 day Mcafee trial as I seem to remember that its a pain to get rid of after the trial finishes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Presumably your neew Laptop is running Vista. If you have an old version of PCGuard on the disc it may not be compatible with Vista. I seem to remember it wasn't when Vista was launched.
You could try downloading it from hereIt's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
Download COMODO firewall ~
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html
and AVG ANTI VIRUS
http://www.avg.com/filedir/inst/avg_free_stf_en_8_173a1373.exe
Disconnect from the internet, uninstall the firewall and anti virus you have (if any)
Install the firewall (untick all the extra stuff you dont need when installing ~ toolbars etc). Reconnect to the internet and install avg:idea:0 -
Id get rid of PC guard, i dont use but then virgin havent sent me a copy or said to download it0

I have tried downloading it from Virginmedia but it tells me I have to connect to the internet even though Im already connected?
The only reason I can think is that I am not connecting to the internet through Virgins own software but have set up the connection through whatever does it with vista?
All seems a bit confusing!0 -
You don't need to connect via Virgin's software, if it's cable broadband you should be able to just plug in the ehternet and set up the network connection. . To be honest I've been with Virgin for years and never PCGuard. I just use Zone Alarm, AntiVir and a variety of anti-spyware apps. It's my problem, it's my problem

Ive heard its a TERRIBLE product, I personally wouldnt touch it with a bargepole!:idea:0

like ive said i dont use it and i probably never will, can you connect to the internt(im guessing you can since you asked for help) without using pc guard0 -
Im using wireless and have set it up using the wizard type thing on Vista, From the sounds of it though nobody seems to use PCguard so I think I will have a look at the best things to use instead and scrap PCGuard. The one thing I liked about PC Guard was that it had everything in one download and everything updated automatically. I realy need something similar as I would always forget to update things!
I can connect to the internet as well, Im using the laptop now to write this so I should be able to download anything I need
Oh and nearly forgot - thanks for the advice everyone.0 -
Defo scrap PCGuard, totally screwed every system i have tried installing it on ( ALL XP Based )
Go with comodo or zone alarm for firewall
Avast or AVG for anti-virus
You can also pick up a cheap copy of Kaspersky OEM edition from somewhere like scan, thats where i got mine from, its one of the best security suites i have used.
If you are a student its worth asking around, for an example i e-mailed eset ( nod32 ) and they gave me a student pricelist.
Pricing for a 1x PC student ESET NOD32 Antivirus licence is as follows;
1 year = £12.75 +VAT
2 years = £19.11 +VAT
3 years = £26.75 +VAT
Pricing for a 1x PC student ESET NOD32 Antivirus licence is as follows;
1 year = £17.00 +VAT
2 years = £25.50 +VAT
3 years = £35.70 +VAT0 -
Would heartily reccommend NOT installing Comodo firewall...it may be free, but it is the most intrusive piece of software I have ever installed. It asks you almost constantly about everything...it the end you just say 'yes' to all the messages without understanding what exactly the issue is, just to make it go away! Sunbelt Personal Firewall, as recommended on this very site does just what a firewall should do and stays in the background (apart from occasional reminders that your 'trial' has expired). AVG seems to be ok as virus checkers go...I have never had any virus problems, so it seems amazing to me that there are some people that actually pay money for their virus checkers.0
