I have a feeling top banana did the chitting in very low light, that's why she has long elongated yellow roots rather than the short stubby dark green shoots that we are told we want.
Either way, they are fine for planting, more important is the temperature of the soil and how ready it is.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

I have just been told that I can have my grans cold frame as she doesn't use it anymore! Oh I am so excited! Although I have no idea what you grow in one as I have never used one before!
jtb2412 Thank you for your advice regarding my beds, I have not planted anything for weeks now and I think I should get another batch of things done this weekend. I seem to have been waiting for the April holidays for ages!
Top_Banana They look good enough to me, I am hoping to get mine planted this weekend too, just need to decide which bed!
Only a few days to go and I can spend two whole weeks focusing on the garden!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Thanks guys!
I have now fully weeded the bed for the spuds, and just need to finish turning it over:

That's a neat looking spud bed you have there top_banana. Was the soil easy to dig, as in friable rather than soggy lumps of clay for instance?
I've ordered my shed which should be here by the weekend. It's 7 x 5 which I hope will be big enough to store my tools, a bench for potting up (and making tea) and storing a couple of chairs over winter. Still waiting for my polythene for the tunnel.
Have got seedlings doing well indoors of cauli, broccoli, sweetcorn and courgette. Have sown leeks and brussels this morning.
I feel like I'm getting somewhere with it now. Still got 2 raised beds to dig, move the manure and spread over the dug ones and dig where the heap was to prepare for peas and beans.
what's everyone else up to?

Morning everyone
At a bit of a standstill here atm as we're off visiting Mum and Dad next week so I don't want to sow too much and not be here to look after them. The bath will be filled with seedlings as well as the kitchen floor (in trays) as it is !
Top_Banana that bed looks good to me. You've worked hard on it :T and the potatoes will help break it up if it's clay soil (the worst stuff to work with but it's really good soil for growing). Keep us updated !
I managed to get my tomatoes and marigolds in the propagator last night (tis nice now it's lighter for longer, I can get a bit done in the garden after tea).
Plan for today (off workback tomorrow though  ) is to potter in the garden, put my leeks in the nursery bed, put my next lot of radishes in (somewhere  ) and dig over a couple of the beds here at home. We have clay soil so it's very hard to work but plenty of compost in over winter and it should be a bit better. I dug it over a few weeks ago and it wasn't too bad but still a few big lumps so I need to get them broken up.
Am going to pick the kids up from school tomorrow and take them down the lotty for an hour or so. I might get up there after work, depends on how early I can finish. One more raised bed to dig and I'm finished (DH hasn't, he's got the hard bit this time lol).
Right off to get the kids up and hang some washing out. Happy Tuesday ! xx:jWeight loss to date 1st 11.5lb :j0 -

Looks like my mum and dad have got a half allotment now to so yesterday we went to take a peak as its a brand new site with 100 half plots, then brought my mum and dad to see mine - its all really exciting you can already see the planning where everything is going its brill.
Anyhow best get off to work, then off down the lottie tonight to do more weed removal and maybe plant some more seeds :j :j
Have a good day whatever you're doing0 -

HI guys, loving all the pictures of great looking beds all ready for planting up this year!
Shaz, I used to do a little bit of trading a few years ago and still know a few people who do. Last year, they were selling off their surplus at 50p per plant for fair sized ones, which I thought was really good.
It was a glorious day here yesterday and looks like it's going to clear up and be the same today, so work is being cast aside until tonight and I'm off out to collect some wood and then it's into the garden I go. Brand new month, I can start sowing April things nowI reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.
