I've noticed this and another trend recently. Once upon a time you would walk around the supermarket picking up own brands. Nowadays they are not always the cheapest.

In our local Tesco a carton of own brand pink grapefruit juice is more expensive than the Del Monte version...

Just as well that we're smarter than they give us credit for. ;D

Not entrirely related, but I've noticed a substantial price hike on Iceland's own-brand goods recently. They used to do do really nice quiches - cheese & onion and cheese & broccoli - at 99p each. Now, they've been re-packaged and form part of a special offer, where you can have 2 for £3.

    Hey Nile

I only stockpile the stuff that doesn't go off so my Walkers crisps are extremely crispy, 2 for 1 in Tesco for last few weeks (Salt & Shake).
Blue Ribband & Breakaway BOGOF too recently.
I just buy enough for a few weeks and try not to eat more than I should.

The huge cupboard in my utility room is stacked with Ariel and the cupboard in the bathroom is well stocked with loo rolls, shampoo, deodourent etc.

My other half is great at building cupboards and being a Yorkshire man he loves to save money.

Can I just ask if this thread is going where Martin intended?

Some of the posts seem to be complaining about items that are special offers.

Well, as they are special offers, for a limited time only, then they WILL be the cheapest option won't they? That's what a promotion is all about (and what we moneysavers should have our beady eyes on!)

I was guessing that the idea was for standard priced items, not on any kind offer, where you *think* that the larger pack should be cheaper.

I can give you many examples of where supermarkets get you for your money, I work for Sainsbury's in the West Midlands area, take your pick from Warwick, Kenilworth or Leamington Spa (one of those three, not saying which as they'll find out and discipline me, not that I care).

A previous post referred to tomatoes being labelled BOGOF and they were charged for both - offers at Sainsbury's end on a Tuesday night. Overnight into Wednesday morning new offers go into the system - the problem arises when the company packaging them send them in with stickers on, on, say the Monday, and they haven't sold in time.

I know my store will split them and sell them as loose (which is illegal, but they can't lose money now can they?)

Produce - organics and prepacked salads - they rip you off big style, apparently they are the two things where the most profit is - most of the rest makes hardly any profit at all. Bananas are the most popular item in my store, and most stores, yet they make next to nothing on them.

Whilst I don't have anything to say in relation to what Martin started this thread for, there are many things you should watch for. Ticketing of products in my store is pathetic - Sainsbury's constantly gap fill when they haven't got something without covering the ticket over of the missing one.

At my store, numerous cases of Produce get thrown away without seeing the shop floor.

And I enjoy it, it means less profit ;D

I have to ask this... where do Sainsbury's keep their bins? I've been reading about Dumpster Diving in the States and I wondered if it was possible to raid my local Sainsbury's ;)

As a spy within, do you have any other hints for getting the best out of Sainsbury's? Start another thread maybe :)

I went through my receipt (as I always do,i've been caught so often) and I had been overcharged on

I have constantly been overcharged at sainsburys. even if it's only one item I'm purchasing the till never gets it right, they must make a fortune from people who don't check their receipts, or can't be bothered waiting at customer services while the 4 or 5 assistants ponce around ignoring the queue >:(

I don't want to be a voice of disharmony but I think I will be. I know it makes sense that the ore you buy the cheaper it but this way it is the people who can least afford it who pay more. When my son was still in nappies, I always bought the massive packs, which invariably if you bought two saved a few quid and the price per nappy was cheaper the larger the pack you bought. However, a friend who was unemployed at the time and receiving benefit on a weekly basis was buying smaller(more expensive per nappy)packs. She couldn't spend that much of her budget on nappies. I know she would save in the long run but having been on benefit myself having anything left over at the of the week was rare. Especially, things like alcohol, you might treat yourself to a few can but a case even cheaper per can would effect the budget overall.

I laughed when I saw the overcharging bit - every poor sod that walks through Sainsburys doors is overcharged!!! (But I take your point on being overcharged for an item - it happens quite often where I work)

In relation to the skip, at my store, it is locked and is in a yard which is always locked unless there is a delivery coming off.

The customer service team at my store are good, the problems arise when stores stick students in that couldn't give a damn.

I don't think anyone can get the best out of Sainsbury's until it's put up for sale and some bigger company (like Wal-mart with Asda) come in and make the company competitive in the market.

I happen to work there, but I don't shop there - except for the common things - i.e bread and milk for convenience.
