lostinrates wrote: »Its actually pretty stunning timing for Rosh Hashanah. I am not Jewish, so apology for any mistakes I make, but unlike 'our' new year, Rosh Hashanah has a strong element of looking back at what errors have been made over the last year and making plans to imprve the situation over the coming year. What could be more pertinent ATM?
L'shanah tovah to you and yours NDG.
And to you!
Today is the first day of the Asseret Yemei Teshuva which means the ten days of repentence. On the first day, Jewish New Year or Rosh Hashanah, the books of account are opened, and Jews divided into three groups - the righteous, the damned, and the majority in the middle. The majority have until Yom Kippur, 10 days later, to sort themselves out (-:
The greeting you've written above means "good year", and the longer version means ""may you be written and sealed for a good year" as it's about judgment.
There is lots of blowing of the shofar, to alert people out of their settled state, casting of prayers and bread on waters to symbolise the casting out of sin, and eating sweet food for a sweet coming year.
Then it builds up to the distinctly grim Day of Atonement 10 days later....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
thats very interesting, thanks. I will remember the sweet bit for Hogmanay ....0

2000 years since Hadrian destroyed the Temple, so the 2 days are hardly an innovation. Incidentally, Hadrian ought to be indicted for war crimes. Better late than never.
Today is the start of the year 5,769, so 2,000 years ago isn't that long (-:...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Bush assures world rescue bill will be passed
Laura Stavro-Beauchamp
30-Sep-2008US President George W Bush issued a call for decisive action from Congress this morning at the White House.
The President says he is disappointed the bill was thrown out yesterday but that the legislative process will continue and there will soon be a rescue bill passed that will address the current trauma gripping the market.
Bush says: "I assure citizens around the world that this is not the end of the legislative process.
"We're at a critical moment for our economy and need action that decisively addresses that troubled assets that are now clogging the financial system, helps lenders to resume the flow of credit to consumers and businesses and allows the American economy to get moving again." He reminded citizens that while $700bn is a large sum of money it would be recouped and that when the bill did not pass nearly $1trillion were lost as a result of shares falling due to the uncertainty caused.I am a Mortgage Consultant and don't like to be told what I can and can't put in a signature so long as it's legal and truthful.0 -
The smilie you use is not the right way round. It should be :-) I think. Otherwise every time I read it I think it is someone bending over.
I'd never thought of it that way

So, anyone got a good cake recipe? Something along the lines of chocolate eclair would be awesome, but I think the pastry type stuff would be kinda tricky?0 -
As we are so far off topic I am going to make a small and slightly picky point. The smilie you use is not the right way round. It should be :-) I think. Otherwise every time I read it I think it is someone bending over.

I don't believe in being doctrinaire about a smilie. (-:

Honey biscuits for Jewish New Year:
4oz butter
4oz soft brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla escence
2 oz honey
8oz self-raising flour
cream the butter and sugar. Whisk the egg and the vanilla together, and add slowly to the butter and sugar to prevent curdling. Beat in the honey.
Sift the flour, and add bit by bit and mix in.
Stick dough in the fridge for 1 hour+ then cut sausage of dough into 32 bits.
Bake at 180 C for 12-15 mins...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Actually choux pastry is pretty easy. The trick is to measure the quantities of the ingredients precisely.
Preheat an oven to 200-220C/GM 6 or 7 (depending on your oven really).
Put 150ml and 50g of butter in a saucepan and heat gently until the butter is all melted. Then turn off the heat and add 60g of plain flour (bread flour aka strong flour is best but ordinary is fine) and beat the mixture for about a minute until it becomes a ball of dough in the pan. Then add 2 beaten eggs and beat them into the mixture.
At this point it all looks like it's gone chests up as it all sort of seperates out and goes sloppy. Just keep beating and in the end you'll get a paste.
This will make about 25 choux buns. Dollop the pastry onto a couple of baking sheets and bake for about 30 mins.
For eclairs, pipe some beaten double cream into the centres and cover in some dark chocolate melted with a little butter and sugar added to it.
These babies don't keep long. The sooner you eat them the better - within 4 hours certainly otherwise you end up with those disappointing things you buy in the supermarket.0
