When did flats become apartments?

When did flats become apartments? I'm sure that they always used to be flats, and I never noticed any change. Now, suddenly, I can't find any flats anywhere, just apartments.

Also, 'estate' seems so, well, 70's. What's the new-millenium-speak for that?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Apartments generally mean its a new build property, therefore worth at least £50k more than the old flat round the corner, you know the one, well built, owner occupiers and a reasonable management fees.

Estates are now called 'developments', they come in many guises including 'select developments', 'executive developments', 'small developments' and thanks to a number of property !!!!!! programmes the most sought after, 'gated developments'.
  • arent apartments meant to have their own door to the street rather than flats which have a communal entrance/hall way ?

About the same time as every man and his dog became a 'property developer'.

    No, that's called a house.
I am a Mortgage Consultant and don't like to be told what I can and can't put in a signature so long as it's legal and truthful.

I have seen plenty of first floor apartments with their own stairway to their own door. Not many fifth floor ones though :rotfl:
